311 Tickets - Band History

The band formed in 1988 with Nick Hexum (vocalist/rhythm guitarist), Jim Watson (lead guitar), Aaron Wills (bass), and Chad Sexton (drums). Watson later left the group and was repleaced by Tim Mahoney. The name '311' came from the police code for indecent exposure in Omaha, Nebraska, the band's hometown. In 1992, Doug Martinez joined the group as a vocalist and to provide turntables for their later albums. Although the band recorded a few songs, they did not make it on the charts.

311's first major record, Music was released in 1993. The band financed their own tour, and 311 tickets sold quickly. Shortly after completing their tour, 311 released their second album, Grassroots, which was very popular with college students, and helped establish a loyal fanbase for 311. In 1995, 311 released a self-titled album, which turned out to be their best-selling album, going triple-platinum in 1996. The band also produced two more albums, Live and Soundsystem, which caused 311 tickets to fly out of the box office.
