McMahon Stadium has been a hallmark of Calgary since it opened in 1960. The storied stadium may not be the world class facility it once was, but no one can deny the history that emanates from the building. From the 1988 Winter Olympics opening and closing ceremonies to multiple Grey Cup championships, it's understandable why many hold the stadium near and dear to their hearts. While the stadium has been around for a while, it is still incredibly active. It is the home of five football teams that range from the collegiate level to amateur and professional squads. The star attraction of the McMahon Stadium is of course the storied Calgary Stampeders: one of the oldest franchises in the CFL and also one of the most successful. The stadium also regularly hosts large concerts and in 2011 hosted the NHL Heritage Classic, a rare outdoors hockey game played between the Canadiens and the Flames. The stadium normally seats about 35,000, but it can be expanded to over 46,000 for big time events. The last renovation took place in 2010; however the improvements were largely centered on backend improvements for staff and players, such as improved locker rooms and office facilities. For the fan, McMahon Stadium offers a largely no-frills experience. Expect a good view of the the game, maybe a quick bite, and a long ride home. While the stadium lacks the bells and whistles that some of its more contemporary peers have, most citizens of Calgary wouldn't have it any other way.
