Jazz singer Al Jarreau is a performer, pure and simple. Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1940, he grew up singing in the church gospel choir where his father was a minister and mother a pianist. After graduating from Ripon College with a degree in psychology and a master's from the University of Iowa, Jarreau worked as a social worker while moonlighting with a jazz trio headed by keyboardist George Duke. After teaming with guitarist Julio Martinez and enjoying success in Los Angeles, Jarreau went full-time as a musician in 1968. After honing his act around L.A. nightclubs and scoring several television appearances, he recorded his debut album, We Got By, released in 1975 by Warner Bros. Records. Through a steady performing and recording career, Jarreau has enjoyed moments of massive success, such as with his 1981 album Breakin' Away with its hit title song and another radio hit, 'We're In This Love Together.' He scored again with his original song that became the theme for the hit television show Moonlighting.
