We can say for sure that there was a trio of bands that rocked the world with the sub-genre known as 'speed metal,' or 'thrash metal.' One was Metallica. Another was Megadeth. The third was especially unique: and the band's name was none other than Anthrax. Founded back in 1981, this was a band made up of guitarists Scott Ian and Dan Spitz, singer Joey Belladonna and bass guitarist Frank Bello, and drummer Charlie Benante, and they as Anthrax not only brought speed / thrash metal to the forefront, but also revolutionized the whole music industry when their first major album hit the stores in the '80s.

The first album was called Fistful of Metal, and indeed there was a fistful of it as you listened. After signing then with Elektra Records in 1993 for a particular album in their repertoire called Sound of White Noise, they came into their own. More albums came out: 1995's Stomp 442, 1998's Volume 8: The Threat Is Real, and many, many more.

The great thing about this particular band is what had set them apart from the others in the sub-genre. Typically, you didn't get much humor and realism out of the bands like Megadeth and Metallica. Their stuff was always quite serious. But when you had the opportunity to hear Anthrax play -- and see them perform on stage -- there was always a healthy dose of lightheartedness, very much like a System of a Down mentality. Merging something like hardcore punk with that heavy metal style, Anthrax took the age of speed / thrash metal into a new era and could arguably award the band the title of 'leader' in the sub-genre.
