August Burns Red formed in 2003 in Manheim, Pennsylvania. Their band name comes from a dramatic story involving original vocalist Jon Hershey. Before joining the band, Hershey was dating a girl named August. When the couple ended the relationship, August became enraged and burned Hershey's dog Redd alive in his dog house, hence August Burns Red. The band released their first full-length album, Thrill Seeker with Solid State Records in 2005. The album quickly garnered the band a sizable fan base, many of who were Christians, as the band also consists of Christians. Evidence can be seen in the release of their follow-up album Messengers, which peaked at number 81 on U.S. charts and number 1 on U.S. Christian charts. The band has gone through multiple lead vocalist changes, but from Constellations on, they have been fronted by Jake Luhrs. They have also gained plenty of respect not just among Christians, but among the heavy music scene in general.
