About Average White Band
About Average White Band tickets
They were like nothing anyone had ever seen when they burst on the music scene in the early 1970s, a funk band with a bunch of white guys from Scotland. The Average White Band, however, fused funk audiences among demographics because of their unusual circumstance, drawing audiences from among pop, rock, funk, R&B, soul and jazz fans with their horn-heavy, rhythmically snappy, simply danceable tunes. Average White Band was formed in 1972 by Scottish musicians Alan Gorrie, bass and vocals, 'Ornie' McIntyre, guitar, Malcolm 'Mollie' Duncan, saxophone, Roger Ball, sax and keyboards, and Robbie McIntosh, drums, and Hamish Stuart joining shortly after on guitar and vocals. Duncan and Ball, from Dundee, Scotland, had been known as the Dundee Horns, and played on Johnny Nash's hit 'I Can See Clearly Now.' When the Scottish lads were invited to tour with Eric Clapton in 1973, they drew big attention and signed with MCA Records, releasing their debut, Show Your Hand, which didn't perform well, and the follow-up, AWB, also known as 'The Average White Album,' which shot to Number One on U.S. Billboard charts, led by the million-selling single 'Pick Up the Pieces,' a favorite even today among school big bands. Their third album, Cut the Cake, featuring the title cut as a single, also scored big. Then tragedy struck when drummer McIntosh died of a heroin overdose. Still, Average White Band picked up the pieces and pushed on, recording 18 more albums since, including Times Squared, Recorded Live at B.B. King's, released in 2009. If you want to move to a groove that's been nearly four decades in the making, pick up Average White Band tickets.
