Their clothing styles, their music, lyrics and live performances are wacky, tongue-in-cheek send-ups of American culture, even while laughing at and appreciating this country's carefree nature.

Ahead of Their Time

When the B-52s started in 1976, in Athens, Georgia, it seemed an unlikely recipe for success. Futuristic and dated at the same time, they caught on quickly as a party band delivering hard-hitting but unconventional dance music. With their first album, The B-52s, featuring a quirky cover shot of the band members in classic 1960s suburban fashion, established their sound and style as weird, unafraid and fun. The single 'Rock Lobster' became a must-play at every dance party and remains one of the songs that sparked the New Wave movement in the 1980s, joined by such bands as Blondie and Talking Heads. The B-52s struck again with their second album, Wild Planet in 1980, boosting them beyond regional success. Their fan base grew throughout the 1980s as they continued to deliver their brand of fun-loving, silly and ultimately danceable songs. It was after the death of co-founding guitarist Ricky Wilson that the B-52s enjoyed their greatest commercial success with the release of Cosmic Thing in 1989. Their latest album, Funplex, was released in 2008.
