Jamaican singer and songwriter Barrington Levy became a star internationally before breaking into the United States music scene. Born in 1964 in Clarendon, Jamaica, he began performing at the age of 12, and, with his band called the Mighty Multitude enjoyed success across Jamaica with his song 'My Black Girl,' released in 1977. The following year he released the single 'A Long Time Since We Don't Have No Love' and established his solo career, becoming a popular performer in Jamaican dancehalls. Still a teenager, Levy began working with record producers Henry 'Junjo' Lawes and Hyman Wright, and the team began cranking out a succession of hit singles, including 'Looking My Love,' 'Al Yah We Deh' 'Englishman,' 'Shine Eye Girl' and 'You Made Me So Happy,' propelling the young performer to stardom. Though Levy release four albums in Jamaica during this teen climb to stardom, his biggest successes came from his singles, and he was among the biggest stars in Jamaica by 1980, when he released his album Robin Hood, which helped spread his fame beyond the Jamaican borders to an international audience as well. Another succession of hit singles followed, including 'I Have a Problem,' 'I'm Not in Love,' 'Tomorrow is Another Day' and 'Under Mi Sensi,' which became a big reggae hit in the United Kingdom, where his fame continues today. Finally, with the 1988 release of his album Living Dangerously, Levy began to edge into the U.S. market, and has collaborated with deejays Bounty Killer and Snoop Dogg.
