We could always use something fresh, something outside the box, in the music industry -- and Blind Melon was that for the era of music. Founded in 1989 in Los Angeles and made up of singer Shannon Hoon, guitarist Christopher Thorn, guitarist Rogers Stevens, bass guitarist Brad Smith, and drummer Glenn Graham, Blind Melon defined what could've possibly been the introduction to true grunge rock but with a classic note to it. Capitol Records capitalized on the band, signing them in 1991 for the release of their very first work.

Not to make you laugh (although you should, because it's funny), these simple but talented musicians considered several band names -- Brown Cow, Mud Bird, Naked Pilgrims, Head Train. 'Blind Melon' won out as a phrase typically mentioned by Brad Smith's father to describe two hippie neighbors back in Mississippi. That didn't make Capitol Records laugh much at all, as they were all about serious business, producing Blind Melon's debut self-titled album in 1992, featuring the hit single 'No Rain.' The album went platinum four times. The band continued to release more records and make great rock memories after that.

Simply listen to Hoon's voice! He was a beautiful, sweet sound -- sort of like Prince, really -- but without the poppy attitude. Representing a hippie mentality, the music was a trippy piece of Heaven, emanating in everyone this sense of serenity that wasn't very typical of the '90s alternative. That's what made Blind Melon so unique.
