Top Christmas Events in Chicago 2012
Nothing means Christmas like wind-chapped lips and frostbitten ears, especially if you live in Chicago, the windiest city of them all. But you can't weather the winter by sitting on your couch with an IV of eggnog (or can you...), so you might as well rouse your weary bones and seize the holiday spirit. If you're hardy enough to brave the cold, consider exploring these lovely holiday events, happening across the greater Chicago area.
Chicago Christmas Shows 2012: Sufjan Stevens
If you're feeling S.A.D, check out Sufjan Steven's annual holiday show, "The Surfjohn (sic) Stevens Christmas Sing-A-Long Seasonal Affective Disorder Pageant On Ice." I'll leave the rest to your imagination... Though you might be interested to know that it will be taking place December 12-15th, at Metro (3730 N. Clark Street, Chicago, IL 60613 773-549-0203). Tickets are notoriously hard to come by, so act now, or remain forever S.A.D.
Chicago Symphony Orchestra: Welcome Yule!
On the more traditional end of the Christmas music spectrum, Chicago Symphony Orchestra will be performing "Welcome Yule!" a program of holiday music in new arrangements, highly conducive to sing-alongs and general cheer. The orcehstra will be performing at Chicago Symphony Center and there are a number of performances from December 14-16th and 21-23rd.
But if all you want for Christmas is Justin Bieber, then it's your lucky year! He, along with Carly Rae Jepsen and Pitbull (a name not usually associated with holiday cheer), will be performing at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, IL (just outside of Chicago), on Saturday December 15th. This "Jingle Bash" could be the infusion of pop music that was always missing from your holidays.

But if Christmas means hard rock and sweating in a Santa suit to you, then consider Richmass 2012, the band I Love Rich's annual Christmas show at the Ultra Lounge. This year, they'll be accompanied by Velocicopter and Mono in Stereo. The night is holiday-themed, so expect to see some elves rocking out, and in the spirit of the season, everyone gets a gift!
For lovely holiday fun with the whole family, ZooLights at the Lincoln Park Zoo is a beautiful option. This is an annual holiday celebration, featuring many lights and family-oriented holiday-season activities throughout zoo grounds. It opened November 23 and continues every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday through December 23. Following December 25, it's open nightly from December 26 though January 6.
