James L. Nederlander, a renowned Broadway producer in the business since 1984, announced that Mike Tyson will be performing at the Longacre Theater in New York City. The show, titled "Mike Tyson: Undisputed Truth", is more of a one-man performance, and will be directed by Spike Lee. This represents the first time that both Mike Tyson and Spike Lee will be on a Broadway stage.
The production will run over twelve nights, from July 31st to August 12th. The show offers a rare glimpse into the life and mind of former heavyweight boxer Mike Tyson. His boxing accolades are extraordinary, but he may be best known for his controversial behavior both inside and outside the ring.
Tyson first debuted the show last spring at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. The Las Vegas Review commented that Tyson's performance was very "compelling" and a "triumph". The LV Review also found the show to be very comical, writing that he broke out "in a tuneless sing-along to 'Another One Bites the Dust,'" at one point in the performance.

Mike Tyson from Ring to Stage
Mike Tyson began his professional boxing career at the age of 18. Tyson won his first professional match by means of knockout (KO), and went on to win the next 25 of 28 contests by KO or TKO (technical knockout). Tyson had a rare combination of intimidating strength, extraordinary hand speed, and unrivaled defensive abilities that led to his storied success in the ring. In November of 1986, he won his first title to become the World Boxing Council (WBC) Heavy Weight Champion. Mike Tyson went on to win several other boxing titles, but his personal life often overshadowed his professional career. In 1992 Tyson was convicted of rape and sentenced to six years in jail. The heavyweight boxer made a short comeback in 1995. Yet once again, his life came spiraling down when he bit off part of Evander Holyfield's ear in the WBC title match, costing Tyson his heavyweight boxing crown.
Tyson fought several other highly promoted matches thereafter. Nonetheless, his personal woes followed him for many years. Tyson sought divorce from his second wife in 2002, filed for bankruptcy in 2003, and lost his 4-year-old daughter in 2009 due to an accident involving a treadmill.
At last Tyson seems to have turned his life around. He told Ellen DeGeneres on her hit show that he is now sober and a vegan; On the View, Tyson stated, "I'm totally destitute and broke. But I have an awesome life, I have an awesome wife who cares about me. I'm totally broke. I had a lot of fun. It (losing his money) just happened. I'm very grateful. I don't deserve to have the wife that I have; I don't deserve the kids that I have, but I do, and I'm very grateful." He's had several cameos on television such as roles in The Hangover and an Animal Planet mini series. However, Tyson has been criticized of late for his outspoken nature.
Tyson, who has bipolar disease, has truly lived a turbulent life of highs and lows, happiness and despair. His biggest flaws are what also make him most interesting and human. The unpredictability of his actions run like a movie, and is one that can only be understood by hearing it in person. On July 31st, Mike Tyson owns the stage, as he once championed the ring, and it should be interesting to say the least.
