Coeur de Pirate Tour 2013

Montreal based chanteuse (that's French for singer..) Coeur de Pirate's (real name - Béatrice Martin) voice matches her wide dark eyes and her vaguely-Skrillex-esque haircut. It's enchanting and catchy without being coying, her musical danceable without being aggressive. There's a haunting quality in her lilting French, which she magnifies by combining her vocals with minimally pop-y electronic beats. Her second album, Blonde, came out in 2011 and went gold in Canada and Belgium. I know this is America, and we sing in English here, but maybe its time to open our ears to some music from our northern neighbors. And what better way to do that than to see Coeur de Pirate live? She'll be in NY in June at Stage 48, where she'll end up after touring France and Canada.

Until 2010, Martin sang exclusively in French, but she broke out her bilingual abilities on Bedouin Soundclash's rhythmic heartbreaker "Brutal Hearts" and they did not disappoint. Since then, she's continued to do put out covers and collaborations with a variety of artists. Check out her killer cover of "Wicked Games" by The Weeknd..it might be better than the real one...well...maybe not..
