The name Icona Pop may not sound familiar, but there’s a pretty good chance you’ve heard their electro-pop hit “I Love It” either while out on a Friday night or sitting in front of the television (possibly on a Friday night, if your clubbing days have come and gone). With its driving beat and infectious hook, it immediately brings to mind all kinds of fist-pumping and drink spilling, but it’s just fun enough to make you consider joining in. Appropriately enough, it was the theme song to a fine addition to the reality television canon, Snooki & JWoww, but has also appeared in episodes of Girls, The Vampire Diaries and Dancing With the Stars, and recently, in a Samsung Galaxy S4 commercial (which only slightly eclipses its appearance in a German ad for Coca-Cola Light in January).
The Swedish DJ duo of Caroline Hjelt and Aino Jawo formed in 2009, and while “I Love It” has definitely gotten them the most airtime, their debut single “Manners” brought them critical praise from Rolling Stone, Pitchfork and The Guardian, who called the single “effortlessly cool.” Just recently, Fuse rated them one of the top 30 must-see acts at South by Southwest. While they've made a solid name for themselves overseas, the duo (now splitting their time between New York and LA) is touring the US this summer, including a stop in New York for the Governor’s Ball on June 7th and 8th.
Icona Pop Top 10 Chart
It may be hard for the duo to top “I Love It” as the best Icona Pop song of all time, but their discography is full of enough fun, synthy pop tunes to keep a sweet sixteen in Stockholm going all night, or at least until curfew.
