Summer X Games XVIII Preview
Skateboard park is the classic "Tony Hawk" skateboard competition. Competing this year will be last year's champ, Raven Tershy, silver medalist, Pedro Barros of Brazil, bronze medalist Ben Hatchell, and legends Bucky Lasek and Omar Hassan. Look for Barros to have a strong showing.
Moto X Speed & Style
Moto X Speed & Style combines Moto freestyle/trick skills with racing prowess and many around the sport consider this to be a good gauge of who the sport's best overall rider is. Most riders will have their sights set on Nate Adams, winner last year's winner. ESPN also says to look out for Jeremy Stenberg, the reigning champ in the Best Whip competition. Also competing will be one of the fathers of the event, Corey Hart, who will look to go out on top before formally retiring from competition.
BMX Freestyle Vert
Although BMX legend Mat Hoffman will not be competing, watch out for another legend in the sport, Brit Jamie Bestwick. Last year's champion will try to repeat, while facing stiff competition from Aussies Steve McCann (who pulled the second ever no-handed 900 in BMX Vert history to take silver last year) and Vince Byron.
In the headliner of the X Games competition, expect to see all the big names battling it out. Last year's three medalists are all back and we hope to see another repeat of last year's exciting competition. Extreme sport legend Shaun White scored a 93.00 to win gold, barely beating out Canadian Pierre-Luc "PLG" Gagnon, who carded a 91.66. Gagnon has won a staggering 5 X Games golds, but this pales in comparison to White's 14 combined Summer and Winter golds (only 2 at Summer games). Also in the mix will be the apparently timeless 39 year-old Bucky Lasek, who has won 6 X Games golds in his career and finished 3rd last year.
X Fest and Ghostland Observatory
All tickets this year will give patrons access to X Fest, "the ultimate action sports festival featuring industry booths, interactive parks, athlete appearances, demos, and more." Also, on Sunday night at the Club Nokia at 7 PM directly following the end of the games with the Moto X Men's Final, American electro/rock/funk duo Ghostland Observatory will be performing. The band has released 4 studio albums, most recently Codename: Rondo in 2010, and is scheduled to release another album in 2012. The band is known for performing with an exciting laser show.
