When NASCAR began in 1948, it started as a small family owned and operated business. Since that time, it's grown to be one of the country's most beloved sports, as well as one of the most popular sports franchises on TV second only to the NFL. Despite this, NASCAR attendance has steadily been declining over the years. Estimates show that attendance for the Sprint Cup fell 8.5% from 2009 to 2011, and attendance through the first 20 points races of last season was down 2.4% from the previous year.
In an effort to combat the attendance issues, NASCAR track operators are adding personal touches to make the races more enjoyable for fans. Some of these include installing fiber-optic cable networks and an antenna system which will help improve wireless capability. Money has also been put in to upgrading restrooms and shower houses, and raceways are even incorporating theme parties and pre-race scavenger hunts to entice fans. Speedway Motorsports Inc. are extending pit tour times, additional driver appearances, and extra shuttles for parking lot transportation.
