After months of requesting a trade, Carson Palmer’s wish finally came true. He is now the new quarterback for the Oakland Raiders. The trade brings an end to Palmer’s standoff against the Cincinnati Bengals ownership. The Bengals refused to trade him, claiming that he must oblige his contract. Palmer fought back by announcing that unless he was traded, he will retire from the NFL.
What led to the trade? After losing their starting quarterback to a collarbone injury, the Raiders were in need of a replacement. Hue Jackson, the Raiders head coach, urged the team to acquire Palmer. The Raiders took Jackson’s advice and made an offer that the Bengals could not refuse. In exchange for Carson Palmer, the Raiders gave up a first-round pick in 2012 and a second-round pick in 2013.
