In two surprise moves, the Philadelphia Flyers have traded captain Mike Richards and fellow star Jeff Carter to the Los Angeles Kings and Columbus Blue Jackets, respectively.
There has been speculation in the past few weeks that Carter would be traded to free up salary cap space to sign free agent goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov. The Carter trade broke on the Twitterverse about an hour ago, around 4:00 PM EST. Carter was traded to the Blue Jackets for Jakub Voracek, the 8th overall pick in tomorrow's entry draft, and a third round pick.
Not too long after the Carter news broke, word started trickling out that the Flyers were on the verge of trading Richards as well. This was the true shocker, as the Carter rumors had been circulating for weeks but most pundits thought that the Flyers captain was safe. As it turns out, he wasn't. Richards was traded to the Kings for Brayden Schenn, Wayne Simmonds, and a second round pick.
There's nothing better than a blockbuster trade! NHL free agency begins on July 1st. We'll continue to track how this affects demand for Flyers tickets in the 2011-12 season.
