Miami Heat: Can They Rekindle The Flame?

by Mason on November 24th, 2010 No Comments

Just one short month ago the Miami Heat ranked 2nd in our NBA Ticket Prices and Rankings with an average price of $157.28; they are currently ranked 9th with an average price of $72.53.  The average ticket to a Heat game is just 46.1% of what it was at the start of the season. This is no big surprise considering the Heat were hyped up since the inception of the Big 3 and are off to a lackluster 8-6 start. The below chart depicts the sharp decline in ticket prices for Miami Heat's home games.

The Miami Heat square off against the 9-4 Orlando Magic tonight.  With a much needed win against the Magic there is a chance that Heat fans will gain confidence in their team.  With a loss tonight, it might be time for Pat Riley to step in and work his magic to rekindle the Heat's flame.  I find it hard to imagine that the Heat can ever live up to expectations but they aren't even coming close at the moment and fan sentiment is declining rapidly.

Do you think the Heat will turn their season around?  Let us know in the comments or on Twitter @SeatGeek.

NBA Opening Day Preview: a Data-Driven Analysis

Here at SeatGeek we are as excited as you are about the release of the 2010-2011 NBA schedule. In fact, it's got us itching for basketball already. So to appease our appetite for hoops we've taken a good hard look at the day when pro basketball returns to our lives, and begins another season full of high-flying Wade-to-Lebron alley-ooping goodness.

The 2010-2011 NBA season officially begins on October 26th, with three games that should peak the interest of even the most casual of basketball fans. The most hyped of the three is clearly the matchup between Miami and the Celtics, as the new (and improved?) Heat take their traveling roadshow up to Boston to face off against Pierce, Rondo, and the Celtics newest big man, Shaq. The other two matchups are nothing to scoff at either however, as the defending champion Lakers host Yao and the Houston Rockets, and Steve Nash and the Suns travel to Portland to battle the Trail Blazers.

At SeatGeek we're all about saving you money on sports and concert tickets. With that in mind, we've compiled a list of average listing prices of every NBA team's first home game of the season. Keep reading to see how your home team stacks up.

Note: The New Orleans Hornets, and the San Antonio Spurs have been omitted from this list. This is due to the fact that the number of tickets listed was too limited to give an accurate depiction the ticket market for those games. As the season draws nearer, and more tickets are placed on the market, we will gain a more concrete idea of what the true average listing price for those teams are.

It most likely comes as no surprise that three of the four most expensive home openers are for the Celtics and Lakers, both of whom made the NBA finals last season, and the Miami Heat, who acquired Chris Bosh and Lebron James this offseason. Here is another look at the top ten most expensive opening games.

Although the majority of ticket sellers list their tickets at reasonable prices, with the hopes of selling the tickets for an appropriate sum, certain games have tickets listed at exorbitant prices that pull the average price for the game well out of proportion. Here are the top ten most expensive ticket listings.

Unsurprisingly, the Heat have by far the highest single listing price, with one seller trying to sell his/her tickets at $12,650 a piece. Most likely those tickets will not sell at that much of a premium, however, it only takes one buyer desperate enough to see Wade, Bosh and King James together for those tickets to move. Other teams with extreme ticket listings include the Knicks and Bulls, who each have tickets listed at $5,500 each.

If you are interested in attending the Heat's opening game extravaganza, or the home opener of any other team, you can find the great NBA tickets, and even sold out tickets, on SeatGeek.

TicketBeat Relaunch: Unique Sports Analysis and Trends

by Chad Burgess on May 14th, 2010 1 Comment

For several months we have been publishing TicketBeat Reports using SeatGeek's unique data to examine trends in sports and music.  Ticketing data is a window into the true emotions of fans.  Pundits can speculate all they like, but nothing captures true fan sentiment as well as their willingness to pay.  TicketBeat uses secondary market ticket prices to measure how fans are reacting to events in the sports and music worlds.  We have published several reports that have gotten lost in the depths of our website, but we hope to change that with this relaunch.

Past TicketBeat reports:

  • Despite No Rings, Eagles Rule The Roost in Philly– Fans Not Feeling the Love (May 7, 2010)
  • AL Fans are the Most Passionate in Baseball (April 29, 2010)
  • Are Red Sox Fans as Loyal as Conventional Wisdom Suggests (April 22, 2010)
  • The Impact of the Recession, Offseason Player Moves, & Payrolls on Ticket Prices (March 30, 2010)
  • No Miracle on Ice: Olympic Buzz Has Little Effect On NHL Ticket Prices (March 11, 2010)
  • NBA 2010 Mid-Season Ticketing Trends (February 20, 2010)

What to expect:

Moving forward we will be posting these reports directly to our blog to make them more readable and shareable.  We will post two reports per week. We hope you all enjoy! Comment if you have any thoughts/comments or reach out to us on Twitter.  We have included a recent TicketBeat report below as a sample of what to expect.

Despite No Rings, Eagles Rule The Roost in Philly– Fans Not Feeling the Love for Their Gritty Flyers

Summary:

They may show some tough love, but fans of the Philadelphia Eagles show unparalleled support for their football team. When compared to the other four major professional sports teams based in Philadelphia, the Eagles rank high when it comes to fans “paying up” to watch them play. The Flyers, on the other hand, are the only team that fails to rank in the top 10 for average ticket prices in their respective league.  Despite their Broad Street Bully heritage and early season ranking as Stanley Cup contenders, the Flyers appear to be the shunned stepchild of the Philly pro sports family.  Philadelphia is one of the most historically significant cities in the US, and with that comes a deep-rooted tradition of sports fanaticism.  Unlike some major markets, Philly is uniquely positioned to bring home titles, as it is one of the few cities to have pro teams in each of the four major sports leagues. However, prior to the Phillies' 2008 World Series, Philly had not seen a championship from any of their teams since the 1982-1983 76ers’s title run. Even though many of the city’s teams have failed to deliver the ultimate prize, the Flyers are singled out at the bottom of the bunch.

Notes:

  • Although Eagles fans are tough on individual players (see Donovan McNabb) they continue to follow their team passionately – ranking 5th in the NFL for average ticket prices.
  • The Flyers’ low numbers really jump out when analyzing the percent difference between team average and league average.  The Flyers average only 3% above the league average for ticket prices, while the other major sports teams have a combined average of 22% above.
  • Despite repeated losing seasons and disappointment with hometown stars like Allen Iverson, the 76ers continue to peak the interest of Philly fans – ranking 8th in the NBA for average ticket prices.
  • After winning the World Series in 2008, Phillies fans continue to come out to the ballpark – ranking 7th in MLB for average ticket prices.
  • Philadelphia is the 6th most populous city in the US – the NFL, MLB, and NBA rankings correlate closely with this metric, whereas the Flyers are an outlier at 11th
