The NFL's Biggest Letdowns

by Ben Kessler on December 10th, 2010 No Comments

This NFL season has been a veritable roller-coaster of close calls, and flat out disappointments that have surprised fans and the media alike. As the regular 2010-11 season is winding down, we thought it fitting to take a look at those teams that were poised for greatness, and truly letdown their fans through the weeks.

Cincinnati Bengals

The Bengals entered the season at their peak, playoff material for the past two seasons and signing Terrell Owens to join Chad Ochocinco for a solid offense. Despite a 10-6 standing last season, the Bengals were never really as good as their record depicted, the offense averaging 19 points per game, the lowest of all 2009 playoff teams, and a defense that allowed 18 points per game. This season, the team has played strong, but overall has underperformed in every way. Terrell Owens has proved he can show up to the job, far outperforming his last season with the Bills, but analysts lay the real blame on Carson Palmer who has averaged 250 yards a game with a decent 20 TDs and a whopping 15 interceptions, A 2-10 record almost guarantees a shake up during the off season.

With a terrible record, comes dismal ticket sales, with the Bengals dropping to #28 in our NFL Ticket Prices & Rankings. The average ticket price for the entire season is at $68, with their final home games against the Cleveland Browns and San Diego Chargers averaging around $95 each.

Dallas Cowboys

There's no question that Dallas has landed on tough times, and could easily be the biggest letdown of the season. It's not easy when the NFL's most touted brand suffers so many atrocities; Tony Romo driven to the ground in Week 7 by New York Giant Michael Boley, suffering a broken clavicle and relieving him from play for the rest of the season. Only a few weeks later, Jerry Jones delivered a swift boot to Wade Phillips, sending the couch packing, and leaving offensive coordinator Jason Garrett in charge. After straight losses, the Cowboys wowed the league with an elegant takedown of the Giants in New York, followed by a win over the Detroit Lions, a loss to the New Orleans Saints, and another win against the Indianapolis Colts. This mini comeback might have been well received, if only Cowboys fans weren't already so letdown.

Cowboys average ticket prices have dropped significantly through the season, but as Dallas fans are some of the most devoted in the league, the team has held steady at #11 in our rankings at $160.

Minnesota Vikings

In 2009, the Vikings might not have made it to the Super Bowl, but they showed an impressive strength throughout the season, ending it only points away from defeating the Saints. Critics might have scoffed at Brett Favre's return, but fans were excited. When the season began, the aged quarterback seemed on top of his game, hitting his 500th touchdown and 70,000 yards, against the Jets in October. Rumors of Randy Moss leaving the Patriots came true, and soon #84 was back home again, But Moss wasn't able to drive the team, in four games, only winning one and departing soon after. A loss to divisional rivals the Chicago Bears, as well as an explosive 31-3 blowout from the Packers sent the team spiraling into a terrible place. Soon after Brad Childress was let go, making waves throughout the NFL and Minnesota fan community. The team faces the Giants this week and a rematch with the Bears again next week at home, but with Favre injured, a shot at the playoffs looks somewhat bleak for the Vikings.

Vikings fans kicked off the season optimistic, with ticket prices rising well over $150 on average. Unfortunately, the team stands on shaky ground after a multitude of rough losses, fueled by the quick departure of Moss, Childress and Favre's reluctance to retire. The Vikings have since dropped close to rock bottom in our standings, ranked at #26 with an average ticket price across the season of $69.

Dallas Cowboys Revived by Jason Garrett

by Mason on November 29th, 2010 No Comments

The Dallas Cowboys turned over a new leaf on November 8th when Jerry Jones decided to finally pull the plug on Wade Phillips following an obscene 45-7 loss to the Green Bay Packers.  Once Jason Garrett stepped in the Cowboys started to look and play like a different team.   In Jason Garrett's first game as head coach, the Cowboys went into The New Meadowlands Stadium to face their divisional rivals and came out with a big 33-20 win against the New York Giants.  In Garrett's second game as head coach, the Cowboys beat up on the struggling Detroit Lions and brought their fans the first home win of the season.  Drew Brees and the defending champion New Orleans Saints handed Jason Garrett his first loss as head coach of the Cowboys on Thanksgiving Day.  The Cowboys were poised to take down their third straight win under Garrett but Brees orchestrated a late fourth quarter drive to reclaim the lead 30-27.

Prior to the start of the season, several NFL analysts predicted that the Cowboys would be one of the top teams in the NFC and will have a chance to win a Super Bowl in their home stadium.  The Cowboys have been a disappointment from game one when they lost to the Redskins.  Even though Jason Garrett is 2-1 as a the Dallas Cowboys head coach, the Cowboys are only 3-8 on the season and will likely miss the playoffs this year even if they win out.  While the playoff hopes for the Cowboys are slim to none, the change at the helm has played a major role in restoring fan sentiment.  Leading up to Wade Phillips' final game as the Cowboys head coach, ticket prices on the secondary market were steadily plummeting as fans were calling for Jerry Jones to fire Phillips.  The Dallas Cowboys average ticket price was $222.81 at the start of the season and gradually fell 37.7% to $138.75 the day Wade Phillips was fired.  Ever since Phillips was fired and Garrett took over as interim head coach, ticket prices have been sharply climbing at a steady pace.  As of today, the average ticket price rose 27.9% since November 8th when Jason Garrett stepped in as interim head coach.

The Vick Effect on Philadelphia Eagles Ticket Prices

by Ben Kessler on November 24th, 2010 No Comments

Are Philadelphia Eagles fans willing to pay more to see Michael Vick as quarterback?

The Philadelphia Eagles got off to a rocky start of the 2010 season. Both Andy Reid and fans were unsure who would lead the team as starting quarterback, Kevin Kolb or Michael Vick. The home opener against the Green Bay Packers ended in disaster with Kolb injured and Vick stepping in to save the day. Still the game ended in a 27-20 loss to the Packers superior offense.

The next home game was one of the most anticipated of the season, when former Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb came to take on the Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field. Michael Vick started the game, but was soon lost to a chest injury. David Akers came through with a kick that helped the Eagles fight back, as well as a touchdown from Kevin Kolb. Andy Reid went on to start Kolb at the two following home games against the Atlanta Falcons and Indianapolis Colts.

After an incredible performance by Vick on the road at the Washington Redskins, it looks like the quarterback is here to stay. Still, it's a bit too early to tell if ticket prices will be affected by Vick. We'll continue to monitor to see how he is impacting demand as the season continues.

Let us know how you feel about Vick's surprising return to the NFL in the comments or on Twitter @SeatGeek.

New York Jets: The Luckiest Team in the NFL?

by Ben Kessler on November 24th, 2010 No Comments

The Detroit Lions have been deemed the unluckiest team in the NFL, so it's only appropriate that we name the luckiest team as well. The New York Jets kicked off the seasonwith adisappointing loss at home to the Baltimore Ravens. But that didn't stop them from fighting back to win their next few games, disarming the Patriots, Dolphins, Bills and Vikings.

The interconference match up against the Packers didn't fair so well for the Jets, with the Green Bay defense shutting down all attempts of getting near the end zone. With a 3-0 lead by the Packers in the third quarter, Mark Sanchez delivered the ball directly to Dustin Keller's hands, which was quickly grabbed by the Packers and designated a fair interception by referees. if the Jets had challenges remaining, the call might have been overturned. The Packers defense continued to put up a strong fight, and the team scored an additional six points on field goals, taking a 9-0 win over the Jets.

It's no question the Jets have been playing solid football through the first few weeks of the season, but it's the last three games that the team has been on the verge of losing and with perseverance and a bit of luck, have pulled through some exciting wins. In a back and forth scoring game against the Lions in Detroit, Sanchez managed to send the game into overtime with a 2-yard touchdown pass to Nate Burleson followed by a field goal kick by Nick Folk. After winning the coin toss Sanchez sent the ball down field 52-yards to Santonio Holmes putting them in field goal range. The Jets won the game by a narrow margin, 23-20.

During Week 10 in Cleveland, the Jets barely pulled through again, and sealed the deal in overtime with a touchdown pass to Holmes. The Jets became the first team in NFL history to win back-to-back overtime games. As Week 11 rolled around, no one was expecting the Houston Texans to put up such a fight, rallying in the fourth quarter to overthrow the Jets 23-7 lead with a turnover and pummeling of their defense, taking control of the game at 27-23 with 55 seconds remaining. With New York fans on the edge of their seats, and only seconds to spare, Sanchez connected with Holmes on a 6-yard touchdown pass, winning the game 30-27.

The Jets record could surely put them in the position of a Super Bowl team, but these last minute, fire drill offensive pushes to rescue the game have proven to be far too stressful for fans. It's interesting to see that average prices for Jets tickets on the secondary market started to drop off around the Week 9 loss to the Packers.

Here's a breakdown of Jets ticket prices by home game, it's interesting to note that they have dropped to #14 in our NFL Ticket Prices & Rankings, only four places up from the unluckiest team in the NFL, the Detroit Lions.

Do the Jets have fair weather fans or have prices dropped due to lackluster rivals in the Texans and Bengals? It's also interesting to note that tomorrow the Jets will play their first ever Thanksgiving Classic game, with prices trending well above the Lions, whose fans have been attending Thanksgiving games for years.

We'll continue to monitor Jets fan sentiment and prices as the season unfolds. Are you a Jets fan, have you been stressed by the past three nail biters? Let us know in the comments or on Twitter @SeatGeek!
