White Sox’s Big Homestand Starts Tonight, Manny is in Town, but Prices Remain Low

by Chad Burgess on September 10th, 2010 No Comments

I recently wrote a blog pot which outlined the steady increase of White Sox ticket prices this summer. However, with some recent struggles, ticket prices have plummeted and at a perfect time for fans to see Manny Ramirez at at a big homestand this weekend for relatively cheap.  As discussed over at ESPN.com, Ozzie Guillen said "We have to go home and turn this around. One thing I know - this team will not quit. They will keep fighting until the end."  Well, that fight begins tonight vs. the Kansas City Royals and we have outlined the ticket price trends below:

White Sox Prices 9.10 Manny's 1st Home Start

  • The White Sox ticket prices peaked with their late August series against the Yankees
  • Prices for this weekend's homestand - the first time Manny will be in Chicago with the White Sox - are averaging just over $40 and well below recent trends
  • For tonight's game, tickets are available for as low as $13 and there are deals that start at 60% of face value
  • For the September 11th game, tickets are available as low as $15 and for the game on Sunday, there are tickets available under $10 (at 37% of face value)

The chart below, better illustrates the rise and fall of the White Sox ticket prices moving into September:

Historical White Sox Ticket Prices 9.8.2010

  • Prices peaked on 8/28/2010 at $72.75
  • In September, ticket prices have plummeted to 55% of the 8/28 average at just over $40
  • Some of the drivers include, the inflation of the average as a result of the extremely high prices at which the Yankees series traded at (see below), the away games during the first week of August and the White Sox's recent losses that have placed them further back behind the Twins

If you are from Chicago, I hope you have some time to get out to the ballpark this weekend.

We are back with our weekly look into the ebb and flow of the MLB secondary ticket market - rankings and highlights below:

Top 10 Most Expensive MLB Ticket Prices Last Week (on the secondary ticket market)

Top MLB ticket prices 8-31-2010

  • Earlier this week, we tweeted about a noticeable increase in White Sox ticket prices and now they have actually topped our leaderboard of average ticket prices in the resale market at $70.32
  • Meanwhile, the Cardinals entered the top 5 for the first time with prices at an avg. of $67.85
  • New York Mets ticket prices continue to fall, and they are now outside the top 5 (we have a detailed post about the Mets price decline here)

  • The Cardinals had the most significant upward jump this week - moving four places into 2nd
  • The Twins dropped the most this week among the top 10 teams - after weeks of rising ticket prices, the prices have returned back to around the season average of $62
  • Nationals prices are also on a significant decline - surely not benefiting from Strasburg's injury
  • The Orioles and Padres entered the top 10, replacing the Nationals and the Rangers

The 10 Least Expensive MLB Ticket Prices Last Week (on the secondary ticket market)

Cheapest baseball prices 8.31.2010

  • Los Angeles Angels ticket prices are still the lowest - we documented the low Angels prices in detail last week
  • The Royals, Brewers, Marlins and Pirates round out the 5 lowest average ticket prices in baseball last week

Weekly MLB Ticket Price Rankings: Twins On Top, Red Sox Rise

by Chad Burgess on August 16th, 2010 1 Comment

Hello everyone, welcome to this week's edition of 'MLB ticket Price Rankings'. After winning 7 of their last 8 games, Twins ticket prices have been the hottest on the market in the past week at an average price of $81.13.
historical Twins ticket prices
As you can see from the chart above, Twins prices have risen steadily throughout the season. The Twins rise to the top this week is attributable to the sharp decline of Yankees ticket prices - the prior week #1 - from $89.93 to $68.66. I suspect this decline is due to fact they were on the road last week and their next homestand is against the Detroit Tigers.

Rounding out the top 5 were:
  • Toronto Blue Jays
  • Boston Red Sox
  • New York Yankees
  • St. Louis Cardinals

In last week's report, we called out how the Red Sox took a rare trip out of the top 5. Well they are back this week at #3 after tying for the largest week-over-week rise (3 positions) with the Blue Jays. On the other side of things, the Rangers had the largest decrease, of 4 positions, as they dropped to 7th in overall rankings.

Weekly MLB ticket price changes

The chart aboves shows the largest shift in rank among the teams in this week's top 10. For example, the Red Sox moved from 6th to 3rd and thus are a +3. Now that we have looked at the teams with the highest ticket prices, let's take a quick look at the teams that are struggling to drive fan demand.

The bottom 5 are:
  • Cleveland Indians
  • Florida Marlins
  • Pittsburgh Pirates
  • Milwaukee Brewers
  • Los Angeles Angels

Find any of these trend particularly interesting? Have any thoughts on what is causing your team's prices to move up or down? Please share your comments below and don't forget to come back to SeatGeek for all your MLB ticket needs.

We recently launched pages that analyze average MLB ticket prices in the secondary ticket market on a weekly basis and provide a ranking of all 30 teams, with the ability to drill down by team (i.e. for Yankees ticket prices here). To complement these highly quantitative pages, we will be doing a weekly blog post to highlight some of the key qualitivative changes from the prior week such as who came out at the top, at the bottom and the biggest movers/shakers from the prior week.

Top 10 MLB Teams by Average Ticket Price (week ended 8-8-2010)

Top 10 MLB Ticket Prices (8-9-2010)

  • New York Yankees tickets are once again trading at the highest average price, with Twins tickets falling to 2nd (we had recently covered the Twins rise to the top)
  • The Rangers, Cardinals and Blue Jays round out the top 5
  • The Red Sox have assumed a rare position outside the top 5, in 6th place

Bottom 10 MLB Teams by Average Ticket Price (week ended 8-8-2010)

Bottom 10 MLB Ticket Prices 8-9-2010

  • The Mariners, Dodgers, Pirates, Brewers and Angels represent the teams with the lowest average ticket prices in the MLB over the past week
  • The Los Angeles Angels have assumed the position of lowest average ticket price
  • The Diamondbacks had previously had the lowest rank in the MLB as determined by ticket prices, but have ascended to 26th over the last 7 days

In the future expect a deeper look into the biggest winners/losers now that we have a baseline to compare to. In the meantime, check out these related in depth ticket reports by division that my colleague Max Fram-Schwartz compiled:
