49ers-Saints averaging highest ticket prices for divisional playoffs

by David St. Martin on January 13th, 2012 No Comments

It's been 30 years since Joe Montana famously hooked up with Dwight Clark to complete "The Catch," but it feels almost as long since the San Francisco 49ers were playing football this deep into January. The 49ers haven't claimed a post season appearance — let alone a winning season — since 2002, so fans in the Bay Area aren't taking the occasion lightly. Of the four divisional matchups set for this weekend, tickets to see the Niners take on the New Orleans Saints in Candlestick Park are currently seeing the highest demand averaging for $404. Games featuring the Baltimore Ravens vs. Houston Texans ($341), Denver Broncos vs. New England Patriots ($295) and New York Giants vs. Green Bay Packers ($266) are all seeing much lower figures.

Average ticket prices have been holding right above $400 for the past week. With over 1000 active listings for the game on SeatGeek, it appears that brokers are looking to cash in and are flooding the market with tickets, but it still hasn't tempered overall prices. Despite the high prices, fans are rising to match that supply with strong demand for tickets.

Right now on SeatGeek, the "get in" price for the game is $166 for seats in the Upper Reserve 19 Row 18 while the priciest option available can be found in Lower Reserve 18 Row 2 for $4127.

Looking ahead to next week, the Packers lead the way in average ticket prices for the Conference Championship games. If the Packers advance after beating the Giants on Sunday, ticket prices to see either the Saints or 49ers play in Green Bay are averaging $644. If New York can upset the Packers, average ticket prices are looking to be substantially lower to see Big Blue play in either San Francisco ($584) or New Orleans ($501).

The Tebow Tour to Trounce upon Tom's Turf - Thunderous Tumults to Threaten Triumphs?

Oh alliterations. Tim Tebow will be heading into Foxboro to avenge the previous matchup between the New England Patriots and the Denver Broncos. In Week 15, Tom Brady took the Patriots into Denver, beat the Broncos 41-23, and silenced Tebowmania. The Broncos subsequently fell into a three-game skid, yet managed to sneak into the playoffs. However, Tebow reignited the fever (which can only be cured with more Tebow) when the Pittsburgh Steelers came into Sports Authority Field at Mile High Stadium last Sunday and the Broncos defeated the six-time Super Bowl champions in overtime.

This week's AFC Divisional Playoff Game is the fourth most expensive Patriots' ticket this season. With an average price of $301.15, Saturday's matchup is just behind home games against the New York Jets ($381.46), Dallas Cowboys ($351.93) and the New York Giants ($329.12). It is the second most expensive Divisional Playoff Game that SeatGeek has on record, next to last year's AFC Divisional Playoff Game against the New York Jets, but by only pennies ($301.81).

As for the Broncos, this AFC Divisional Playoff Game is the most expensive game of the year, home or away. The game at Foxboro on Sunday is 18.57% more expensive than the Broncos game against the Green Bay Packers in Lambeau Field. This Week 4 game in the throes of the Kyle Orton era ended in a 49-23 loss to the defending Super Bowl champs.

Tickets for this Saturday's AFC Playoff Game peaked on January 2nd ($426.79 avg. price), the day after the Patriots secured the number one seed and home field advantage. Prices then trended down and bottomed out on Friday, right the Wild Card Playoff Games. Since then, prices have steadily risen and are currently selling for above average.

The cheapest price are four tickets in Section 340 Row 22 at $147, but using SeatGeek's DealScore technology, the best bang for your buck is a ticket in Section 133 Row 12 for $293. In fact, DealScore lists a lot of great deals for these tickets. For seats in the 100 Sections, these are a great deal for the New England Patriots, the team with the highest average home ticket price.

Head to Head History

In lifetime regular season games, the Broncos hold a 25-17 edge and beat the Patriots twice in post-season play. The playoff victories were generations apart, the first win occurring in 1986 with John Elway handling the reins, and the second win in 2005 where the Broncos forced five turnovers against the Pats, including two picks on Tom Brady.

The last time the Broncos beat the Patriots, however, happened in October 11th, 2009. Josh McDaniels former/new New England Patriots assistant was head coach of the Broncos, the coach who drafted both Tim Tebow and Demariyus Thomas.

Matchup to Watch

I don't think there's any real argument. Sure, you could claim that the Patriots's secondary should be wary of Demaryius Thomas. You could also argue that Champ Bailey should be shadowing Wes Welker. And what are the Broncos going to do about the TE Touchdown Twins - Aaron Hernandez and Rob Gronkowski? All those concerns pale in comparison to the real question we all want to know - who has the better hair?

I personally dig the Brady look. It flows so effortlessly - a true byproduct of Gisele's influence. It's a look that I aspire to emulate and have done so, with varying amounts of success. However as one who once sported a legit mohawk, Elmer's glue and all, I appreciate the friar cut of Tebow.

So who wore it best? Tebow or Brady? Let us know here @SeatGeek or drop a comment below. Let us know your predictions for this matchup and if the Broncos can cover the 13.5 point spread (or even pull out another win).

Giants-Packers averaging lowest ticket prices of divisional playoff games

by David St. Martin on January 11th, 2012 No Comments

It's surprising, but Sunday's NFC Divisional Playoff matchup between the New York Giants and Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field is seeing the cheapest average ticket prices of all four conference games this weekend. Tickets to see the Giants try to exact some revenge over a Week 13 loss to the Packers are currently going for an average price of $272, $131 less than the average cost to see the New Orleans Saints take on the San Francisco 49ers at Candlestick Park ($403). Forced to march into Lambeau riding a three-game losing streak, Eli Manning and the Giants nearly played spolier in December as the Packers looked to come away with their 18th consecutive victory. With 58 seconds remaining, it took an MPV effort from Aaron Rogers to drive the Packers within field goal range to ice the game.

So why the low ticket prices to see the rematch? Brokers are flooding the market trying to sell tickets which is lowering the overall market price. Right now there are just under 1000 active ticket listings for this game on SeatGeek, most of which are for multiple tickets. But are Packers' fans thinking a trip to the NFC Conference Championship game is a foregone conclusion? Or are New Yorkers not making the trip out west to Wisconsin for the same reasons?

Right now on SeatGeek, the "get in" price for the game is $165 for seats in Section 134 Row 47 while the priciest option available is a suite for $17,150.

Oddly enough, the Packers lead by a mile when looking at average ticket prices for the Conference Championship games the following week. If the Packers go on to beat the Giants on Sunday, ticket prices to see either the Saints or 49ers play in Green Bay are averaging $644. If the Giants go on to beat the Packers, average ticket prices are looking to be substantially lower to see Big Blue play in either San Francisco ($584) or New Orleans ($501).

The New York Giants play their first ever playoff game in MetLife Stadium this Saturday, but prices are continuing to fall on the secondary market. With an average of $227.28 for home games this season, tickets to this NFC Wild Card Game are more 20.9% more expensive ($274.83 avg. ticket price). It is the most expensive home game this season, but only the third most expensive, behind road games against the New England Patriots ($329.12) and the Dallas Cowboys ($311.12).

Once the Giants clinched the NFC East by beating the Cowboys on New Year's Day, tickets spiked for the playoff game, reaching record heights on January 2nd ($338.22 avg. ticket price). It's good news for fans who waited for the excitement to die down. Ticket prices has since steadily declined, with tickets on January 6th averaging 42.70% less than its peak price ($193.83 avg. ticket price).

Although prices are cheaper, it's not because fans are purchasing standing room only tickets and upper level seats. During the price decline, 46.87% of tickets purchased are in the 100 Sections of MetLife Stadium.

The cheapest available ticket on SeatGeek also happens to be the best deal according to our DealScore technology - 4 tickets in Section 307 for $49 each. This is cheaper than the $88 standing room only ticket. There are even fourth row tickets in Section 110 available for $314 each.
