How Do Injuries Affect NFL Ticket Prices?

by David St. Martin on December 12th, 2011 No Comments

As any fantasy owner call tell you, the 2011 NFL season has been particularly brutal as far as injuries go. I don't know whether it was the lockout or just the universe lashing out, but this season is stressing the value of depth like none other. So which team has been hit the hardest? You can measure wins and losses, but we wanted to take a deeper look into how ticket demand was affected by significant injuries.

We can go ahead and crown the Indianapolis Colts right off the bat after likely losing Peyton Manning for the season, but we wanted to look at how demand changed for teams due a significant, mid-season injury. Manning's neck injury has sunk Colts ticket prices to an average ticket price of $51, good for 3rd lowest in the league. Of the few injures we chose to focus on, here's how the data shook out:

5. Philadelphia Eagles - QB Mike Vick

To say expectations were high for quarterback Michael Vick and the rest of the Philadelphia Eagles would be a bit of an understatement. After Philly won the Nnamdi Asomugha free agency sweepstakes in the off-season, Vick and Co. were expected to win it all. Someone forgot to tell Andy Reid. The Eagles opened the season an embarrassing 1-4, dropping four straight after topping the St. Louis Rams win Week 1. Things took another tragic turn when Vick suffered two broken ribs on a QB sneak against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 10. The Eagles went on to collapse in the fourth quarter, losing the game by a score of 21-17. At the time of Vick's injury, the average price of a Eagles home game ticket was $183.34. After the injury that number dropped 7.8% to $168.93.

4. Minnesota Vikings - RB Adrian Peterson

Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson hasn't had the season many fans had hoped for after signing a contract making him the highest paid rusher in football. The 2-7 Vikings were struggling with Peterson, so when the star back went down with a high ankle sprain in Week 11 against the Oakland Raiders things got even worse. Peterson was carted off the field early during the second quarter and never returned. The Vikings went on to lose to the Raiders by a score of 27-21. At the time of Peterson's injury, the average price of a Vikings home game ticket was $98.64. After the injury that number dropped 13.8% to $84.79.

3. Houston Texans - QB Matt Schaub

Houston Texans quarterback Matt Schaub had taken his team to a 7-3 record before breaking his foot on a QB sneak in a Week 10 matchup with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Texans went on to win big by a score of 37-9 and have yet to drop a game without Schaub. Still, demand has dropped significantly for Texans home games. At the time of Schaub's injury, the average price of a Texans home game ticket was $151.98. After the injury that number dropped 20.9% to $130.99.

2. Chicago Bears - QB Jay Cutler

Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler had led his team to a 7-5 record before breaking his thumb in the fourth quarter of Week 11's matchup with the San Diego Chargers. After throwing an interception, Cutler was attempting to make the tackle on Chargers defensive back Antoine Cason but was pushed hard into the turf for the effort. The Bears held on to beat the Chargers by a score or 31-20, but ticket prices quickly began to drop. At the time of Cutler's injury, the average price of a Bears home game ticket was $249.43. After the injury that number dropped 24.5% to $188.22.

1. Buffalo Bills - RB Fred Jackson

Buffalo Bills half back Fred Jackson was leading the NFL in rushing until he went down in the third quarter of Week 11's meeting with the Miami Dolphins. Jackson finished the day with just 17 rushing yards, one more than quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick. The Bills went on to lose to Miami by a score of 35-8. At the time of Jackson's injury, the average price of a Bills home game ticket was $81.60. After the injury that number dropped 29.7% to $57.30. We're not talking huge differences in price, but the percentage change is pretty impressive. It's surprising to see demand shifts for playoff-bound teams like the Bears and Texans, but one would think Bills fans would do their best to maintain attendance numbers at Ralph Wilson Stadium with blackouts looming for their remaining home games.

Is Jon Jones Setting A Trend for Low UFC Ticket Prices?

by David St. Martin on December 9th, 2011 No Comments

Despite the lack of buzz surrounding Jon Jones' light-heavyweight title defense to Lyoto Machida this weekend, UFC 140: 'Jones vs. Machida' is, in fact, happening Saturday night. This fight isn't generating the sort of buzz would one expect from such a dynamic, talented young champion, so what's the problem? Is it an instance of a card simply being under-promoted? Or is this becoming a trend for Jones?

Tickets for UFC 140 are averaging at $210, about the going rate for a non-title headlined UFC fight card. Despite the average to low numbers, these prices are actually an improvement over his last fight at UFC 135 ($190) against Rampage Jackson. The highest average ticket prices involving the three actually came at UFC 123 when Jackson and Machida squared off for the right to face Jones for the title. Jackson went on to score a win over Machida via split decision. Now that Jackson has tried and failed, it's Machida's turn at the phenom.

Top 5 Most Demanded NFL Games of Week 14

by David St. Martin on December 7th, 2011 No Comments

The NFL. If you're not watching it, you're at least aware of it. The fans demand it, some more than others. This week's most demanded games feature some teams ready for the playoffs, some not so ready and Tebow.

Cleveland Browns at Pittsburgh Steelers - Heinz Field

Coming in at No. 5 is a divisional matchup between the struggling Cleveland Browns and the Pittsburgh Steelers at Heinz Field. Just looking back to last week, this one could get ugly pretty quick. The Browns looked awful against Baltimore, while the Steelers did anything they wanted against the Cincinnati Bengals. Pittsburgh can clinch a playoff spot with a win here, so look for them to try to run all over the Browns the way the Ravens did in Week 13. Ticket prices for the game are averaging $158 today, but listings are available on SeatGeek for as low as $41.

Indianapolis Colts at Baltimore Ravens - M&T Bank Stadium

Our No. 4 game between the Indianapolis Colts and Baltimore Ravens makes another appearance for the winless, sans Peyton Manning squad. But it's not surprising to see high demand whenever the Colts return to Baltimore, especially if they're likely to be crushed. With the season all but lost and 0-16 a very real possibility, it's looking more unlikely we see Manning risk further injury by attempting a return. Tickets are averaging at $164 right now, but fans can still find listings on SeatGeek for as low as $71.

Chicago Bears at Denver Broncos - Invesco Field at Mile High

The No. 3 most demanded game this week is a showdown between a banged-up Chicago Bears squad and Tim Tebow's Denver Broncos at Mile High. With talk this week of possibly bringing in quarterbacks Donovan McNabb and Brett Favre to take over for a struggling Caleb Hanie, the Bears look to be in serious trouble. Compounded by the loss of leading rushing Matt Forté to an sprained MCL and we could be looking at a horrendous offense trying to compete against the much-improved Bronco's D. Tebow is now a win away from leading his team to a 7-1 record, pretty impressive considering the flak he's caught his entire profesional career. Ticket prices are averaging $184, but fans can find listings on SeatGeek at starting at $113.

Oakland Raiders at Green Bay Packers - Lambeau Field

Our second most demanded game this week isn't much of a head scratcher. After pulling out a gutsy win on the road against the New York Giants in Week 13, the Packers are back at Lambeau to face the Oakland Raiders. At 7-5 the Raiders are actually having a much better season than many could have imagined after losing starting QB Jason Campbell for the season. An early move to acquire Carson Palmer from the Cincinnati Bengals looks to have been the right one. Tickets prices are averaging at $207 right now with 'get in' prices starting at about $144 on SeatGeek.

New York Giants at Dallas Cowboys - Cowboys Stadium

Finally, the No. 1 most demanded game for Week 14 stars two divisional rivals in the New York Giants and Dallas Cowboys. After taking a commanding lead in the NFC East and posting a 6-2 record, the Giants have now dropped games in four straight weeks. But after losing a hard-fought matchup with the undefeated Green Bay Packers in Week 13, the Giants are looking more like they did earlier this season. Dallas is reeling after last week's loss to the Arizona Cardinals. Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett has been brutalized by the media after calling a last second timeout that neutralized what would have been a game-winning field goal for Dallas. Tickets prices are averaging a league-high $308, but fans can still find listings on SeatGeek starting around $140. General admission tickets can be had for as low as $30.

Jets Trail Giants in Average Ticket Prices

by David St. Martin on December 6th, 2011 No Comments

With both the New York Jets (7-5) and New York Giants (6-6) still alive in the playoff race and calling Metlife Stadium home, we thought we'd look into which side is doing better at getting fans to the games.

Right now, the Jets ($176) trail the Giants ($218) in terms of average tickets prices for home games across secondary markets. For both home and away games, the Giants ($242) rank second across the league while the Jets ($151) come in at No. 7.

The opponents' combined records don't seem to be factoring in as the Jets (33-39) and Giants (32-40) are nearly identical in that respect. The issue seems to be that Giants fans are far more willing to pay higher prices to see NFC East matchups than Jets fans are to see their team play AFC East opponents. Giants home games against the Cowboys on Oct. 1 ($234), Eagles on Nov. 20 ($226) and Redskins on Dec. 18 ($200) were huge sellers this year. The G-Men also hosted the Packers ($272) on Dec. 4 which was their most demanded home game this season."

As for the Jets, their most demanded home games this season were matchups with the Giants ($227) on Dec. 24 and Dallas Cowboys ($217) on Sept. 11. Jets' home games against division rival New England Patriots on Nov. 13 and Buffalo Bills on Nov. 27 averaged $215 and $147, respectively.
