Vocalist extraordinaire Bobby McFerrin has been one of the most innovative, ground-breaking singers to grace the pop genre. Though he has enjoyed enormous commercial and critical popularity, he has refused to remain tied to one style and has teamed with musical stalwarts from jazz, classical and fusion genres, including cellis Yo-Yo Ma, jazz pianist Chick Corea, keyboardist and composer Joe Zawinul, drummer Tony Williams, and the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra. Ironically, with all his successful collaborations, it was his 1988 album, Don't Worry, Be Happy, featuring the title cut as a single, that brought him his biggest commercial success. That song, the first-ever Top 40 hit recorded completely solo, with no overdubs and no instrumentation, zoomed to the Number One spot on U.S. charts. But McFerrin's musicality certainly extends beyond simple pop tunes. Born in 1950 in New York City, McFerrin was the son of two classical vocalists. After finishing college in California, he performed numerous pickup gigs before settling in San Francisco, where he met Bill Cosby, who set up a gig for McFerrin at the 1980 Playboy Jazz Festival. That led to the Kool Jazz Festival the next year, and McFerrin signed with Elektra, and recorded his debut, self-titled album. He then made history with his second album, The Voice, the first-ever solo vocal album without accompaniment to be released on a major label. Eighteen albums have followed, including VOCAbuLarieS, released in 2010, as McFerrin has collaborated with an impressive group of talent.
