Crooner Bobby Vinton was cranking out polished, reverb-dripping hits in an era when rock and roll was beginning to take over, yet he stayed with his signature sound and put together a stellar career of hits right through rock and roll, the British Invasion and even the Woodstock era of more serious rock. Born in 1935 in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, Vinton was encouraged as a child in his interest in music, and formed his first band at age 16, which played in clubs around Pittsburgh. While studying music at Duquesne University, he learned to play several instruments. After a two-year stint in the U.S. Army, Vinton was signed to Epic Records, at first as a Big Band leader, with little success. But when he sang and recorded a song called 'Roses Are Red (My Love),' he had his first hit as the song shot to Number One on Billboard. Vinton followed that success with an astonishing number of hit singles in the 1960s, scoring in the Top Ten charts with his signature song 'Blue Velvet,' 'There! I've Said It Again,' 'Mr. Lonely,' 'Tell Me Why,' 'Satin Pillows,' 'L-O-N-E-L-Y,' 'Take Good Care of My Baby,' 'I Love How You Love Me,' 'To Know You Is to Love You' and many more. With his Polish ancestry, Vinton came to be known as 'The Polish Prince,' and hosted his own variety show, The Bobby Vinton Show from 1975 to 1978.
