Unique name, diverse music for Brazilian Girls (Updated December 19, 2012)

An obvious naming convention for a group that includes two men and one woman – none of which hail from Brazil – would probably not be 'Brazilian Girls.' Yet the moniker has yet to hinder the trio's success, thanks to a diverse mix of music that includes tango, reggae, lounge and many other styles.

The members of the band admit their name is designed to steer people to the 'wrong' sites during an Internet web search. Still, they're happy it piques curiosity and stirs investigation.

Brazilian Girls were originally founded as a four-member group in 2003. Sabina Sciubba, Didi Gutman, Jesse Murphy and Aaron Johnson came together in an arts community on New York's Lower East Side. With a weekly gig at club Nublu, the band quickly gained a following and wrote most of the material that would appear on their self-titled debut album, which was released in February 2005.

In 2006, the band not only recorded the song "Crosseyed and Painless" for an AIDS benefit project, they also released their sophomore album, "Talk to La Bomb." It was followed in 2008 by "New York City," and the band toured through the fall that year before taking time off for Sciubba's pregnancy. (During that period she recorded a solo album, while Gutman co-wrote and produced several tracks for Bebel Gilberto and was nominated for an Emmy for scoring the HBO documentary "Sins of my Father.")

Despite reports of a breakup in January 2011, the Brazilian Girls collaborated with several artists for the Red Hot Organization's charitable album "Red Hot+Rio 2." Five months later the band officially reunited at Nublu, playing live shows and reportedly recording new material. The band has not yetannounced if it will tour in 2013.
