The World Golf Championships (WGC)-Bridgestone Invitational is an annual World Golf Championships event that is organized by the International Federation of the Professional Golfers Association. The event is held at the Firestone Country Club in Akron, OH. The tournament had a field of 75 invited players. To be invited, a player must have been a member of the last Presidents or Ryder Cup team, ranked in the top 50 on the Office World Golf Rankings, must have won a worldwide event since the prior year's tournament with an Official World Golf Ranking Strength of Field Rating of 115 points or better, or a winner of one selected tournament from each of the PGA Tour of Australasia, Sunshine Tour, Asian Tour and Japan Golf Tour.

The Bridgestone Invitational was first established in 1976. From then until 1998, the event was called The World Series of Golf. The tournament gained sponsorship from NEC in 1983 and was called the NEC World Series of Golf. Beginning in 1999, the World Series name was dropped in favor of the WGC-NEC Invitational. Sponsorship changed hands again in 2006, and Bridgestone had had naming rights ever since.
