Call her... another Canadian success (Created April 3, 2013)

Call her a phenomenon. Call her a superstar. Just… call her.

Canadian singer/songwriter Carly Rae Jepsen became the female equivalent of Justin Bieber when "Call Me Maybe" was released as the lead single from her EP "Curiosity" on September 20, 2011. What followed was an absolute whirlwind in which Jepsen became the most popular pop artist in the world, opening a window into a future where "Call Me Maybe" would sell more than 9 million singles worldwide and climb to the top of the charts in more than 37 countries.

How did Jepsen – a relative unknown outside of Canada – manage to not only hit it big, but ride the wave so high, so fast? Sure, she had a previous third-place finish on "Canadian Idol" on her resume, along with an album from 2009 called "Tug of War." But "Call Me Maybe" took on a life of its own, spending a record-breaking nine weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100. It led to a referral from Bieber himself, and in a matter of months Jepsen had inked an American deal on Interscope Records.

Before long, Jepsen was collaborating with some big names on the way to the release of her latest album, "Kiss." The project bowed on September 12, 2012 with flares of disco-pop, dance-pop and teen pop. And yes, there were also guest vocals from Bieber on the guitar-tinged "Beautiful," helping the disc to more international success. It debuted at number six on the Billboard 200, and number five on the Canadian Albums Chart.

In the fall of 2012, Jepsen began a worldwide tour with the Biebs that has now made its way to Europe. She's also writing new music and preparing to perform on the "American Idol" season finale.
