Carousel was the second stage musical by the team of Rodger's and Hammerstein. The musical, which was adapted from the 1909 play Liliom by Ferenc Molnar, is about a traveling carnival man named Billy Bigelow, whose romance with a factory worker Julie Jordan comes to an end when he attempts to rob a bank to support their unborn child. The original production, which starred John Raitt and Jan Clayton, ran for 890 performances on Broadway. However, the show continued to tour nationally, playing to nearly two million people worldwide. As a result, Carousel remains a classic amongst musical theater fans, and is routinely performed at dinner theaters, regional theaters, college and high schools world wide.
