Caveman breaks out (Created May 29, 2013)

Meet Caveman, a vibrant quintet from New York City whose self-released debut album was just a first taste of their take on indie pop. Your ears will be ringing, your mind will be dancing on the band's take on everything from experimental and post rock to the sounds of Africa.

Comprised of Matthew Iwanusa (lead vocals, guitar, drums), Jimmy "Cobra" Carbonetti (guitar), Stefan Marolachaki (drums, vocals), Sam Hopkins (synth, vocals) and Jeff Berrall (bass, vocals), Caveman came together in January 2010 and quickly became a reputable draw. Whether it was the harmonies or guitar lines, the affable personalities or the solid evidence that these guys were much more than a local draw, they quickly landed opening gigs for the likes of The War on Drugs and Built to Spill.

Caveman's full-length debut, "CoCo Beware," arrived in September 2011, with tribal drums keeping beat to what's been called the project's very 'Zen-like' appeal. Recorded in Brooklyn's Rumpus Room, the band's ultimate goal was to give the music a warm, saturated feeling. And the verdict? Critics hailed it as a "mission accomplished" for the music's dreamy, cinematic qualities.

The band followed that freshman project with a second, self-titled record in 2013. And though it was perhaps more subdued, with more reflective melodies, the album ultimately drew comparisons to the Shins, especially for the similarities of Shins vocalist James Mercer and Iwanusa.

Caveman is currently on tour, with dates scheduled everywhere from the Highdive in Champaign, Illinois (June 14) to the Majestic Theatre in Detroit, Michigan (June 26).
