Though he has put together a stellar recording and performing career, including three dozen Number One hits and millions upon millions in record sales, singer Charley Pride didn't start out singing. Born in Sledge Mississippi, in 1938, the son of poor sharecroppers, Charley Pride started out chasing his dream of becoming a professional baseball player, and in 1952 landed a spot as pitcher for the Memphis Red Sox of the Negro American League, eventually earning a spot on the Boise Yankees, a farm team of the New York Yankees. But music was always with him, and as his minor league bus trolled from city to city, he played guitar and sang songs. Finally, while in Nashville a few years later, Pride came to the attention of record producer Chet Atkins and signed with RCA Records. After a few minor hits, Pride's music career took off when he released the single 'Just Between You and Me,' which brought him a Grammy Award in 1966. An amazing string of country hits followed, including 'All I have to Offer You (Is Me),' 'Is Anybody Goin' to San Antone,' 'I'm Just Me' and more. His biggest hit came in 1971 when he released 'Kiss an Angel Good Mornin'' and sold a million copies, crossing over to pop charts and becoming his signature tune.
