The Story of Chick Corea

There are few pianists in jazz and fusion history who have made more of an impact and who have figured into the evolution of modern jazz as much as Chick Corea. In his extensive career, Corea has played with some of the genre's most legendary musicians, such as Miles Davis, Cab Calloway, Herbie Mann, Stan Getz, Roy Haynes, Herbie Hancock, Dave Holland, and the list goes on. Born Armando Anthony Corea in 1941 in Chelsea, Massachusetts, Chick Corea was introduced to the piano at age 4 and grew up surrounded by the sounds of bebop: Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Bud Powell and others. After a brief stint studying music at the Juilliard School, Corea started his career playing with trumpeter Blue Mitchel in New York, as well as several Latin bands. Corea's first album as a leader was Tones for Joan's Bones in 1966, with Woody Shaw playing trumpet and Steve Swallow on bass. He then went through an avant garde period, in 1968-1971, forming the group Circle, and playing with an experimenting Miles Davis.

In 1971 Corea entered a seminal period of his career when he formed the historic fusion-jazz-rock group Return to Forever, with bassist Stanley Clarke the mainstay, switching in such supporting players as Lenny White on drums, Jean-Luc Ponty, Airto Moreira, Flora Purim and Al Di Meola. The group led the way of the fusion era in the 1970s, recording such classics as 'Crystal Silence,' 'La Fiesta,' and '500 Miles' and 'Spain' off the Light As a Feather album in 1972.
