There are not many musicians, or artists, who can claim to have changed the course of culture, but that's exactly what Chubby Checker did when he scored a monster hit called 'The Twist' in 1960. With that single song, which was originally written and performed to less fanfare by Hank Ballard, Chubby Checker launched a dance sensation that changed the way young people moved and grooved. For the first time, Checker's twisting dance gave couples permission to separate on the dance floor and stand apart doing their thing together. Free-style dance has never been the same since. Of course, Chubby Checker wasn't born with that name. He was born Ernest Evans, in 1941 in Spring Gulley, South Carolina. Due to his portly nature, he earned the name Chubby from his friends, and it was Dick Clark's wife who gave him the name Checker, a play on words in connection with his similarity to the music of Fats Domino. Chubby Checker was born, the 'King of the Twist.' Though none of his subsequent recordings matched the success of 'The Twist,' (and how could they?), Checker followed up with a succession of dance tune hits, including 'The Hucklebuck,' 'The Fly,' 'Dance the Mess Around' and 'Pony Time,' another Number 1 hit. He recorded 'Let's Twist Again' in 1961 and won a Grammy Award for Best Rock and Roll Solo Performance. Other Twist-related hits followed, including 'Slow Twistin'' and 'Limbo Rock,' his last Top 10 hit. Still, the original 'King of the Twist' continues to attract fans from all over the world and Chubby Checker tickets are a chance to see the one who started it all.
