Dance Gavin Dance formed in 2005 in Sacramento. Soon after, they signed to heavy music label Rise Records and released their debut full-length Whatever I Say is Royal Ocean, which peaked at number 46 on Billboard Top Heatseekers charts. Later that year, front man Jonny Craig left the band and was replaced by Kurt Travis. In 2010, Dance Gavin Dance and Travis parted ways and welcomed Craig back into the band. They then released Downtown Battle Mountain II, their most commercially successful album to date. It charted at number 82 on Billboard charts overall, as well as at number 4 on U.S. Hard Rock album charts. The album was a resounding success partly because it was the long awaited follow-up to fan favorite Downtown Battle Mountain, and partly because the return of Craig brought about renewed interest in the band. Nevertheless, in 2011, Craig announced that he would be taking an extended hiatus from music.
