About Dar Williams tickets

A singer and songwriter in the tradition of Mary Chapin Carpenter, Patty Griffin, and Shawn Colvin, Dar Williams paints pictures and tells reminiscent stories with her evocative songs. Her contralto voice moves easily into her developed falsetto range in performance, giving her a wide range and a spectrum of vocal colors. Born in 1967 in Mount Kisco, New York, Dorothy Snowden Williams adopted the nickname Dar when one of her sisters mispronounced her first name. She began playing guitar at age nine, and soon started writing songs, then attended Wesleyan University before moving to Boston, Massachusetts, always writing songs and making demos. When she began performing in the coffeehouse circuit around Boston she began building a following, but found the cluttered Boston folk scene intimidating, and moved to friendlier Northampton, Massachusetts, in 1993. Soon, she was opening for Joan Baez, performing on public radio, in coffeehouses, and her Internet fan base was becoming enormous. After making two full-length demos, in 1990 and 1991, she recorded her first full album, The Honesty Room, in 1993, on her own label, Burning Field Music, which became one of the top-selling folk records of the year. She followed with Mortal City, which drew widespread attention, with guest artists John Prine and Lucy Kaplansky. By the release of her third album, End of The Summer, Dar Williams' career was picking up steam and the album was a huge success. She formed the group Cry Cry Cry with Richard Shindell and Kaplansky, and has since released ten more albums, including 2010's Many Great Companions.
