You can always tell, within a couple notes, that it's David Sanborn. The stellar alto saxophone player has a sound that is instantly recognizable, a sharp, jazzy tweak with an edge that says you're going to want to move to his danceable, funky music. Over his three-and-a-half-decade career Sanborn has built a massive following, appealing to fans widely across genres, including pop, fusion, rock, R&B, funk, pop and certainly jazz. He played at Woodstock with the Paul Butterfield Blue Band. He can be heard on David Bowie's classic tune 'Young Americans.' For a while, he was part of Paul Schaffer's band on Late Night with David Letterman. And for a while in the 1970s and 1980s, he turned in a string of hits of his own, pulling down six Grammy Awards. David Sanborn was born in 1945 in Tampa, Florida, and overcame polio in his youth, taking up the saxophone on his doctor's advice to strengthen his chest and breathing muscles. Growing up in Missouri, he played with Albert King and Little Milton at age 14 in St. Louis, and has performed with a long list of recording artists as a session player, including Eric Clapton, Stevie Wonder, Paul Simon, the Brecker Brothers, Bruce Springsteen, Little Feat, the Eagles, the Grateful Dead?the list goes on and on. All the while, Sanborn has cultivated his own recording career, loudly announcing his arrival with his debut album Taking Off in 1975, and not letting up since, releasing his most recent album, Only Everything in 2010.
