Fast Out of the Gate

Deep Purple (named, its rumored, after Ritchie Blackmore's grandmother's favorite song) caught on quickly after forming in 1968. Another album later that year, The Book of Taliesyn featured clever reworkings of Neil Diamond's 'Kentucky Woman' and Lennon and McCartney's 'We Can Work it Out.' But the band's true personality wasn't solidified until 1972's Machine Head , with the mega-hit 'Smoke on the Water,' along with 'Highway Star.'
