Def Leppard vs. the Record Label (Updated January 16, 2013)

When it comes to the biggest names in music, the last thing you expect to hear is that one of them is at war with their record label. Or in the case of Def Leppard, their former record label.

January 2013 found the band re-recording as much of their back catalogue as possible after failing to reach an agreement with Universal over digital releases of their songs.

"We're trying to wrestle back our career and ownership of these songs," frontman Joe Elliot told Classic Rock magazine at the end of 2012. "They [the label] own the originals, we're at loggerheads with them over the digital rights. … we're not going to let them exploit us to the extent that they're trying to."
To that note, Def Leppard cut five acoustic songs performed during their Rock of Ages tour for a medley released to iTunes. And they won't stop there. The band says its ultimate goal is to wrestle back their career and get the same rate for digital music as they do when they sell CDs.

As the fight continues, Def Leppard will begin a three-week residency at Las Vegas' Hard Rock Hotel & Casino on March 22. They will perform the album 'Hysteria' in its entirety during the shows, which will take place at the 4,000 seat club called the Joint. Also part of the show will be a greatest hits segment.
Def Leppard are following in the footsteps of Guns N'Roses and Motley Crue, both of whom had successful runs at the venue in 2012. The shows will run through April 10, 2013.
