At first glance, if you were to see and hear this particular rock band perform, you wouldn't have known that their very essence was an attack on dehumanization and de-evolution -- hence the name 'Devo', a short name for it. They were one of the staples of MTV, born 1972 and hitting a deal with Warner Bros. A dream come true for band members Jerry Casale, and Mark, Bob, and Jim Mothersbaugh.

The band is, obviously, best known for the smash single 'Whip It,' a progressive electronic rock tune in 1980 off the album Freedom of Choice. They went on to release later albums and catching on with such a cult following that even today music lovers are celebrating that electro-pop sound that was inherently Devo.

Part of their infectious appeal was the jerky, robotic touches they gave both to their performances and their music, typical of '80s music. They were, in fact, one of the first bands to incorporate synthesizers as part of the core element in their songs. That went in line with the philosophy they were trying to attack in their core beliefs that technology and the American dysfunction of society were linked inexplicably together as the proclaimed de-evolution of mankind. Pretty deep stuff for a bunch of guys dressed up as futuristic farmers in the classic MTV video for 'Whip It.'
