Don McLean started performing folk/folk rock music when he was still in prep school. He released his first album, Tapestry, in 1969. His big break game when United Artists Records took over Mediarts. His first album from United Artsists Records became his most famous, American Pie. His most famous song, American Pie, was partly inspired by the deaths of Buddy Holly, Richy Valens, and J.P. Richardson in a 1959 plane crash. The line, the day the music died, references the plane crash. American Pie reached number one on the U.S. Billboard Charts for four weeks in 1972. It continues to be McLean's most popular song. In 2002, American Pie was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
