The American band Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros are the invention of songwriter and singer Alex Ebert, a former member of the power pop band Ima Robot. The band was formed in 2007 when, after breaking up with his girlfriend, moving out of his house and joining a 12-step addiction program, he met singer Jade Castrinos in Los Angeles, and formed the band named after a messianic figure named Edward Sharpe. As Ebert has explained, Sharpe 'was sent down to Earth to kinda heal and save mankind?but he kept getting distracted by girls and falling in love.' The group's first full show, with a large group, including keyboards, percussion, horns and accordion, was at the Troubadour in West Hollywood, California, after which they recorded their first full-length album, Up from Below, released in 2009. Supported by a cross-country tour, traveling with a large contingent of musicians and friends in a big white school bus, the first album has done well, scoring an international hit with the single 'Home,' a wildly endearing country-folk-pop tune with innovative use of horns, whistling and Ebert and Castrinos trading vocals. The song was voted number 15 on the Australian Triple J Hottest 100, 2009, countdown, the largest music poll in the world, and has been featured in movie and television soundtracks and commercials. Other tunes by the group have also done well, including the songs '40 Day Dream/Geez Louise,' 'Chickens of Love' and 'Janglin.' All considered, this is a group quite unlike any other, and Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros tickets are a chance to partake in a folk-country-hippie-pop music fest that is impossible to classify.
