That seemed to be the state of rock 'n' roll during the '90s, as more of a softer punk-style alternative rock mentality took over, as well as the boy band age -- filtering out some bad things that needed to be changed. The iconic band Nine Inch Nails tried to do that -- and one other band did, also. That was Filter. Musician Richard Patrick, who originally toured with the Nails, one day met with one Brian Liesegang to form the band Filter with a contract on Reprise Records in 1995 for their debut album.

There's no doubt as this band had released one of the most iconic, original songs ever known to man: 'Hey Man, Nice Shot.' When the debut album Short Bus was released in 1995, it was that single that propelled the LP to gold. Epitomizing alternative metal in a very big way, Filter came back in 1999 with an even harder rock mentality and a softer edge along with it, thanks to the release of their second album Title of Record, a platinum seller with a monumental hit helming the release: 'Take a Picture.' Other songs Filter is known for are 'Jurassitol' featured on the 'Crow: City of Angels' film and '(Can't You) Trip Like I Do' for the 'Spawn' film.

It was that jagged, raking, ragged voice of Patrick's that nailed an audience and brought out a college mentality of major power rock style. 'Hey Man, Nice Shot' was remarkable in the sense that it started off so quiet and slow, like a whisper, up to a point where Patrick then raged on the microphone so hard that he could blow out his vocal chords. They redefined alternative metal beautifully.
