Jazz guitarist and vocalist George Benson has done it all: recorded with Miles Davis, on his album Miles in the Sky in 1968, performed with legendary jazz clarinetist Benny Goodman, on a memorable television appearance in 1975, scored his own pop hits in the 1970s, and refined a jazz guitar style that has served his long, steady career. Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1943, George Benson began performing at age 8, playing jazz guitar in an unlicensed Pittsburgh nightclub until the police closed it down. He recorded his first album as a leader, The New Boss Guitar, featuring organist Jack McDuff, in 1964, the first of 34 albums to date. It was in 1968 that Benson was tapped by Miles Davis for a guitar track on his tune 'Paraphernalia.' With several albums climbing up the Billboard jazz charts, Benson was gaining a reputation and following. By the time he signed with Warner Bros. Records in the mid-1970s, he was ripe for breakout appeal, and his first album with that label, Breezin', was the perfect vehicle, featuring not only the instrumental crossover hit 'Breezin'', but also the smash hit 'This Masquerade,' with Benson on vocals, a tune that introduced him to pop audiences. That song won Benson a Grammy Award for Record of the Year, and he followed it with another Grammy Award-winning song, 'On Broadway,' again showing his vocal abilities. More hits have followed in Benson's long career, including 'Give Me the Night' in 1980.
