Keyboard master George Duke has never been one to settle for sitting behind a grand acoustic piano. The innovative jazz man has ventured far beyond his first love into the realms of pop, funk, fusion, soul, R&B, disco, psychedelic, and progressive rock, and through his career he has moved on from acoustic instruments, taking up the electric piano and other electronic keyboard instruments, such as the portable, shoulder-slung variety that allows him to funk out on stage. Born in 1946, Duke's stories career began after he completed studies at the San Francisco Conservatory, where he studied trombone, contrabass and composition. He quickly began session work and in 1967 teamed up with jazz violinist Jean-Luc Ponty, then jazzers Don Ellis and Cannonball Adderly, before switching gears and joining Frank Zappa's band, Mothers of Invention in the early 1970s. Weaving his way effortlessly from style to style, thanks to his early sessions work, Duke teamed with a succession of hit-makers, including Stanley Clarke, Billy Cobham, George Clinton, Anita Baker and Harry Sweets Edison. Increasingly, Duke put on the producer's hat and has become influential in that realm as well, producing tracks for Miles Davis, the Pointer Sisters, Barry Manilow, Smokey Robinson, Gladys Knight and several Brazilian artists, such as Airto Moreira and singer Flora Purim. Meanwhile, Duke has steadily put together an impressive discography, recording more than three dozen albums as band leader, and continuing to pack concert venues for his funky, jazzy, soulful shows.
