The San Francisco indie band Girls is mostly founding members, lead singer and main songwriter Christopher Owens, and bassist and producer Chet 'JR' White, along with several supporting band members. For the most part, Girls keeps it simple, with upbeat songs verging on satirical, but also heavily laced with love, falling in love, girls?the stuff of pop and rock forever and ever. Girls was formed in 2008 after Owens has emerged from his membership in the Children of God cult, a new religious movement begun in Huntington Beach, California, which promotes salvation, apocalypticism and spiritual revolution. Owens has commented, in an interview with Exclaim! magazine, that Girls' debut album, Album, released in 2009, is an 'overflow of expression' as a result of having spent time in the Children of God cult, in which he was not allowed to listen to music from outside the group. However, he added, he was allowed as a member to watch movies, from which he was exposed to music from the likes of Queen and Guns N' Roses, influences that vaguely show up in Girls songs. More prevalent are the influences of classic pop bands such as The Beach Boys, Tommy James and the Shondells and other Southern California beach acts. But Owens has shown his ability to veer from that formula, especially with the Girls single 'Vomit,' released as a free download from the band's latest album, Father, Son, Holy Ghost, released in 2011.
