    Stephen Curry 2013 Highlights

2/28/13: Golden State may be behind the Clippers by six games, but that should not keep them from doing anything stupid. And it wasn't. This year's trade deadline was not as frantic as in years past, but the Warriors were smart to hold on to Klay Thompson, rather than trade him to the Hornets for a package involving Eric Gordon. Golden State is still in position to make the playoffs, and that is with Andrew Bogut playing scarce minutes. Bogut may return to regular playing time as he heals, but the Warriors have done well enough as is, and do not need to ruin the make up of the team with a foolish trade.

2/21/13: Like the Portland Trail Blazers, the Warriors lost five consecutive games heading into the All-Star Break. Golden State had been the surprise team in the West until then, but perhaps the fatigue was wearing in. In any case, this is a team that needed a break. The big question facing the team is if Andrew Bogut will be back. Bogut has been playing limited minutes due to an injury and the All-Star Break was to be the time when the team considered unleashing Bogut fully. If, and it is a big if, he can return to regular playing time, then Golden State can re-establish themselves as a legitimate playoff contender in the West.

2/14/13: Golden State has plenty of things to be proud of this year. The team is second in the Pacific Division with a 30-21 record - that is 5.5 behind the Clippers and 6.5 ahead of the laughable Lakers. One thing they should not be proud of, however, is the new sleeved uniforms designed with Addidas. The jerseys look like a soccer uniform - they are form fitting, but breakaway from the traditional sleeveless style that every basketball team in any league, at any age level, whether male or female, wears. The only upside is overweight, middleaged men who still wear jerseys will not have the misplaced tee shirt underneath.

1/3/13: It has taken two decades, but the Golden State Warriors have finally figured out how to play defense. The Warriors stand at 21-10, 3.5 games behind the Pacific Division leading Clippers. It is their best start in 20 years. If Golden State can continue this pace then they will surely be a playoff team. The resurgence has been keyed by defense. Second year coach Mark Jackson has focused on improving the defensive effort and it has paid off. The acquisition of players like Jarret Jack and Harrison Barnes fit Jackson's scheme, which should pay off in May.

12/20/12: The Golden State Warriors continue to be resilient in the face of obvious adversity. The team currently sits at 17-9, only 2.5 games behind the Pacific Divison leading L.A. Clippers. Key to the Warriors success has been the play off the bench from Jarrett Jack and Carl Landry. Andrew Bogut is (as always) injured, and Brandon Rush is likely out for the year with a torn ACL. The Warriors have 10 road victories, and it is not even Christmas yet. David Lee and Stehpon Curry are performing at All-Star levels, but the whole team is contributing - possibly turning over the thought that a team must have at least two superstars to compete.

11/29/12: When Andrew Bogut first had a procedure on his ankle, it was reported that scar tissue would be cleared out and a three month recovery time. Seven months later and Bogut is still on the shelf. The original forecast may have been overly optimistic, and the team may have rushed Bogut back before he was fully healed. Now it looks like January in a best case scenario, but that is not guaranteed. The real question becomes if the Warriors can remain competitive while the Lakers struggle - at least long enough for Bogut to return to action.

11/22/12: Don't tell the Warriors they are not supposed to compete this year. A few weeks into the season and they are only a 1.5 games behind division leading LA Clippers, and a game up on the LA Lakers. Most recently, Golden State dispatched the trendy team du jour, the Brooklyn Nets on Thanksgiving Eve. Golden State suffered another poor start, trailing 30-18 after the first quarter. However, the team got it going thereafter and trailed by five at the half. They took control in the second half and won 102-93. The Lakers look to improve soon, but the Warriors do have the roster to stay competitive throughout the season and get back to the playoffs.

11/15/12: Golden State had to be licking their chops on Friday when the struggling Lakers came calling. The Lakers were 1-4 and had just fired their coach hours earlier - even though the day before he was giving the dreaded 'vote of confidence'. Bernie Bickerstaff was the interim head coach and this was a perfect time to steal a game from a Western Conference rival. Unfortunately, the Lakers figured out what to do on this night, beating the Warriors 101-77. The Lakers seemed to have steeled themselves together and blocked out all the distractions. As for Golden State, it is time to prove they are legitimate in the West, and put this loss behind them.

11/8/12: The Warriors are off to a 2-2 start, and leading the Northwest Division at this point (tied with the LA Clippers), but make no mistake, they are struggling. The root of the issue is Andrew Bogut's health. Bogut, surprisingly, is one of the better defensive centers, and the team is much better when he is on the court. The problem is that he has not been on the court. The team goes from plus 4 with him, but are on the wrong side of par without him. Bogut hopes that he will be completely fine in three to four weeks, but that is a long time to be shorthanded in the ultra-competitive Western Conference.

11/1/12: No one is quite sure how good guard Stephan Curry is or can be. He has flashed a lot of potential - particularly in shooting from long-range - but has been hampered by injuries. During the shortened 2011-12 season, Curry only played in 26 games. However, he shot 49% from the field and an astounding 45.5% from three-point range. The Warriors think they have a budding star on their roster, and just signed Curry to a four year, $44 million extension. At an $11 million average, Golden State may have just gotten a great bargain for Curry's prime years.

10/18/12: This is an important year for Golden State - both the players and the front office. The Warriors traded their franchise player and fan favorite Monte Ellis to Milwaukee last year for an injured Andrew Bogut. He has yet to play a game for the Warriors and many people question the sanity of the trade. But if Bogut is healthy, a big 'if', then he is one of the best defensive players in the league. And that is exactly what the Warriors are banking on. He appears to be improving, and if he is healthy, then Golden State just may have a ticket to the postseason.

10/4/12: David Lee may as well have hit the lottery a few years ago when he signed with Golden State for 6 years and $80 million dollars. He had been a cornerstone and fan favorite on the Nicks (during the Isaiah years), but New York let him walk and Golden State happily found a place for him. The results have been mixed, but Lee has been in a tough position. He can be an elite offensive weapon, and now that Andrew Bogut is healthy and can play some defense, he can focus on his prime mission - which is scoring points.

8/16/12: A quick view of a Royals-friendly blog shows the AL wild-card standings. A tremendously optimistic viewpoint, considering the Royals are 10th out of 11 teams and 12.5 games back. But they are ahead of Minnesota by a game and a half. About this time last year, both the Cardinals and Rays were about 10 games out of the playoff hunt and both staged historic comebacks to make the postseason. KC's eastern neighbor even won the World Series. The optimist will point out that with two wildcard slots, the Royals are still in it. But the other 99.9% of us can only hope that they Royals will improve in 2013.

8/2/12: The Warriors should return for the 2012-13 season a bigger, stronger, and better defensive team. Golden State overhauled their roster by adding six players: rookies Harrison Barnes (1st round pick), Draymond Green, Festus Ezeli, and Kent Bazemore, as well as veterans Jarrett Jack and Carl Landry. Additionally, the Warriors re-signed swingman Brandon Rush to a two year, bargain rate contract. Rush will have the option to opt out of the second year, which could lead to a big free agent payday if he has a strong season. Rush had breakout season averaging 26 minutes and 10 points last season.

7/26/12: "We're going to sign a player" was GM Bob Myers call a few weeks ago, but no one figured that would be Kent Bazemore. Bazemore wass an undrafted free agent out of Old Dominion who showed what he can do in Summer League play. The Warriors went 5-0 in the Summer League, and Bazemore shined in four games, averaging 8.5 ppg and 3.8 rebounds in over 20 minutes. Bazemore is considered undersized, but has an enormous 7'0 wingspan. He won the Lefty Driesell Award in 2011 as the nations best defensive player, and may have won himself a roster spot as well.

With two picks in the first round of Thursday night's NBA Draft, the Golden State Warriors took Harrison Barnes from North Carolina with the seventh overall pick Barnes, who played two seasons at Chapel Hill, averaged 17.1 points and 5.2 rebounds as a sophomore small forward. The Warriors hope that Barnes will complement Stephen Curry in the Golden State backcourt. With their second pick in the first round, the Warriors selected the Nigerian-born big man Festus Ezeli from Vanderbilt with the 30th overall pick. The 7-foot Ezeli will add some much needed size and strength to the Warriors.

5/22/12: Question: where does Golden State call home? The answer is Oakland, but only temporarily. The Warriors announced plans to move across the Bay to San Francisco in 2017, and are doing the unthinkable in modern day pro sports - they are financing the new arena themselves. The new venue will sit on Piers 30-32, which the city will provide rent-free. The team claims to already have the $500 million needed for funding. Now they must navigate a variety of local agencies to finalize the project - no easy task, as these were the same agencies that drove the iconic 49ers out to Santa Clara.

5/15/12: The good news is that three of the Warriors top players, Stephon Curry, David Lee, and Andrew Bogut are expected to completely healthy for the start of training camp next season. All three went under the knife for late-season injuries, and all have expected recovery times of two months. Curry and Bogut shared a doctor for ankle procedures while Lee was treated for an abdominal tear. With point guard and two bigs expected to be back, the Warriors must focus on acquiring some players between these two extremes. The team will try to re-sign Brandon Rush and Dominic McGuire to fill the holes, and probably a few others for depth.

5/11/12: Just as he did in New York, David Lee gained the respect and admiration of teammates and fans alike by playing a scrappy and full-effort game. And just like in New York, he is stuck on a mediocre team with no true Alpha Dog. Lee averaged over 20 points per game until a torn abdmoninal muscle kept him out fo the final few weeks. The midseason arrival of Andrew Bogut should serve Golden State well for the next few years. The Warriors will have that strong low-post presence needed in today's NBA. Should Lee, Bogut and Stephon Curry all return healthy, Golden State can contend for a playoff spot.

5/3/12: The Warriors finished the seasons losing 10 of their final 11 games, beating only the Timberwolves in that span, to finish at 23-43. The slide left Golden State 13 games out of the playoff spot, and has led many to believe they 'tanked' the season to improve their lottery draft position. If that was the strategy, then it worked. Golden State will pick seventh in draft, after winning a tie-breaker with the Toronto Raptors for seed. Conversely, had the Warriors drawn the eight seed or higher, they would have forfieted their first round draft pick to the Utah Jazz as compensation from an earlier trade.

4/25/11: With the season complete, Golden State heads into the offseason with more questions than answers. The Warriors struggled throughout the season and have several holes to fill over the summer. The team saved one of their more inspried games of the season for a meaningless match against the similarly struggling Minnesota Timberwolves. Golden State rallied from a 21 point deficit to a rare 93-88 road win. Point guard Charles Jenkins showed his mettle and played all 48 minutes, finishing with 24 points, 6 rebounds, and 9 assists, with Brandon Rush adding 19 points - 10 in the fourth quarter.

4/18/12: The Warriors are third to last in the West, and are in full tank mode at this point. Golden State has won only 2 of 10 games in April, and their losing streak is now at five games. The most recent defeat, to San Antonio, saw a healthy Tim Duncan play only 12 minutes and 15 minutes for Tony Parker. For the Warriors, Klay Thompson scored 29 points and Nate Robinson came off the bench for 30 points in 31 minutes. Expect the misery to continue in Oakland, as the Warriors still have games against the Lakers, Houston, Dallas, and San Antonio again.
