In a short time, everybody gets to 'Know' Gotye (Updated January 23, 2013)

What can you say about a musician whose voice has been compared to the likes of Sting and Peter Gabriel? Well, there's a lot to say about Wouter "Wally" De Backer, known by the stage name Gotye. The Belgian-Australian is a singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist whose big break came with the hit "Somebody That I Used to Know."

Though De Backer began making music in his bedroom as a teen, it took three independent albums for fans and critics to sit up and take notice. Still, he's come a long way from printing his own CDs, handwriting the track list and coloring in the sleeve by hand. Once he had the ear of Australia's Melbourne street press and a youth radio station taking notice, he eventually got a distribution deal for "Boardface," released in late 2003.

Backer's next release was as eclectic as his living arrangements. He recorded tracks in a makeshift home studio as he hopped from house to house over several years, and the album "Like Drawing Blood" was a reference to the difficulties he experienced in ever-changing environments. The project won him 'Most Outstanding New Independent Artist' in Australia and later won iTunes album of the year in the UK.

Running with the success, Gotye released "Making Mirrors" in 2011, collaborating with New Zealand vocalist Kimbra on "Somebody that I Used to Know." The song took on a life on its own, as it topped the US, UK, Australian and 23 other national charts, and sold more than 13 million copies worldwide. It was performed live on shows such as "American Idol", "The Voice" and "Saturday Night Live," and covered in the "Glee" episode "Big Brother."

Gotye later paid tribute to the stunning number of cover versions of "Somebody That I Used to Know" by releasing a video remix, comprises of segments from hundreds of online parodies and covers, titled "Somebodies: A YouTube Orchestra."

Gotye's 2012 world tour began in August in Korea, then went through Japan, North America, Europe and the Middle East before ending in Australia in December. He's heading to India for the first time in February 2013, and will perform in Delhi at Blue Frog as the finale to Oz Fest.
