Houston Astros News: Regular Season and Preseason Updates
Lucas Harrell was outstanding and pitched well enough to earn his 10th victory of the season as the Houston Astros handily defeated the Chicago Cubs by the score of 10-1 on Tuesday night. Harrell pitched eight strong innings, allowing just one earned run over six hits and two walks. He also added seven strikeouts over the course of his 104 pitches as he lowered his season earned run average to 3.81. Brett Wallace, Fernando Martinez and Scott Moore all went deep for the offense, while Brandon Barnes and Jose Altuve also drove in runs in the winning effort. Overall, the Astros were an impressive 4-8 with runners in scoring position.
Despite a average start from Armando Galarraga, the Houston Astros found themselves on the wrong end of the scoreboard as the team lost to the Washington Nationals by the score of 4-3. Galarraga pitched five innings, allowing three earned runs on six hits and six walks. Jason Maxwell, Carlos Corporan and Ben Francisco each drove in runs in the winning effort, with the team hitting an overall and impressive 3-9 with runners in scoring position. Jose Altuve also added his 23rd stolen base of the year in the second inning off Nationals starter Gio Gonzalez. Lucas Harrell will get the ball for Houston on Thursday night.
Jordan Lyles didn't have his best stuff and the Houston Astros could not recover as the Milwaukee Brewers routed the Houston Astros on Wednesday night by the score of 13-4. Lyles lasted five innings, surrendering nine earned runs on nine hits and two walks. He also added three strikeouts over the course of his 98 pitches, but picked up his eighth loss and raised his earned run average to 5.95 on the season thus far. Brett Wallace went deep for Houston twice, both solo shots that provided the bulk of the offense for the Astros. Jose Altuve also drove in a run on the game, his 29th of the season thus far. Harrell pitched seven strong innings, allowing just one earned run on seven hits and three walks. He also added six strikeouts over the course of his long 121 pitch outing. At only 21 years of age, he has provided the fans in Houston with something to get excited about. After a forgetful 2011 campaign, the Houston Astros have gotten out a 3-3 start behind the timely hitting of rookie second basemen Jose Altuve who leads the team with a .368 batting average through the first six games. Altuve, a native of Venezuela, is only 21 years old and is taking advantage of his opportunity to secure the second base job in Houston for many years to come. Staff ace Wandy Rodrguez has provided the team with 11.2 solid innings in his first two starts of the season, allowing only three earned runs and striking out 7 over that timespan. The team will face off against the new-look Miami Marlins in a 3-game set this weekend.
