Colorado Rockies News: Regular Season and Preseason Updates
5/23/13: The Rockies signed veteran pitcher Roy Oswalt to a minor league deal with the hopes of bringing him up to the big leagues. This is not the first time Oswalt has pulled this move - he tends to skip spring training and the first half of the season and join a contender mid-season. Nice work if you can get it. However, Oswalt in 2013 is not Oswalt in 2004. Additionally, Coors field is not an ideal pitcher's park. Last, the Rockies are a decent team this year, but they are not one Roy Oswalt away from making the playoffs.
5/16/13: Colorado finally solved the St. Louis pitching on Sunday night, bashing the Redbirds 8-2. However, that was after two days of getting schooled in the art of pitching. Colorado got a broken bat single from their lead off hitter on Friday. Then the next 27 batters went down in succession in a 3-0 loss (a gem of a game from Cardinals' rookie Shelby Miller). On Saturday, their first 13 players did not reach base (count 40 in a row). Adam Wainwright went on to pitch a two hit shutout. Good pitching beats good hitting, and that is the way it was In St. Louis. But the 8 runs on Sunday must have been a nice release.
5/9/13: The Rockies got off to a very impressive start, far better than anyone really expected. Through the first week of May, they are tied for first with the reigning World Series Champion San Francisco Giants, and are two games clear of third place Arizona. The Dodgers, who were expected to challenge the Giants are 3.5 games back. Pitchers generally do not like to throw in Denver where the thin air improves hitting. But the Rockies seem to be in this for the long haul and signed three time All-Star pitcher Roy Oswalt to a minor league contract. Oswalt, when on, is a great pitcher, though he got rocked last year as a member of the Texans.
Jeff Francis held on long enough to earn his fourth win of the year as the Colorado Rockies defeated the Milwaukee Brewers by the score of 9-6 on Monday night. Francis pitched 5.1 innings, allowing three earned runs on six hits and two walks. He also added two strikeouts over the course of his 76 pitches. Offensively, Jason Herrera, Carlos Gonzalez, Will Rosario, Tyler Colvin, Chris Nelson and DJ LeMahleu all drove in runs in the winning effort. The team managed an impressive 15 hits off Brewers pitching and were a strong 8-16 with runners in scoring position, more than enough to seal the victory against the reeling Brewers. Tyler Chatwood will get the ball for Colorado on Tuesday night.
Despite only lasting four innings, Alex White was solid for the Rockies and helped send Colorado to a 3-1 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday night on the road. White lasted four innings, allowing zero earned runs on one hit and five walks. He also added two strikeouts over the course of his 80 pitches, but because he didn't pitch five innings, could not earn a victory. Josh Rutledge provided all of the offense for the Rockies, going 4-5 with three runs batted in to give him 18 on the year. Overall, while the team did manage 10 hits, they were just 2-15 with runners in scoring position.
Jonathan Sanchez continued his struggles on the 2012 season on Sunday as he led the Colorado Rockies to a 7-2 loss to the Cincinnati Reds. Sanchez lasted just 4.1 innings, surrendering six earned runs on eight hits and two walks. He also added three strikeouts, but also allowed two home runs as he saw his earned run average balloon to 11.88 on the year. Offensively, Josh Rutledge blasted his second home run of the season in the first inning off Reds starter Matt Latos, a two run shot that accounted for the teams only runs of the game. Overall, the Rockies managed just six hits and were 0-5 with runners in scoring position.
Jonathan Sanchez struggled in his first start with the Colorado Rockies as the team lost a 6-3 ball game to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday night. Sanchez pitched just four innings, allowing five earned runs on six hits and four walks. He also added five strikeouts en route to his first loss in a Rockies uniform this season. Offensively, the team managed just six hits against Ian Kennedy and the Diamondbacks bullpen, two of which were home runs. Carlos Gonzalez provided some late fire by adding his 20th HR of the season in the ninth inning, but unfortunately for Colorado it wasn't enough to earn the win.
The Colorado Rockies received some good news on Thursday as it was revealed that their All-Star shortstop Troy Tulowitzki will only miss around 6 weeks after undergoing surgery on his left groin. Tulowitzki originally injured his groin on May 30 in a game against the Houston Astros while running out a ground ball in the infield. The primary diagnosis was that Tulowitzki would miss up to 8 weeks following his surgery, but it is now expected that he will be back on the field a little bit sooner than was originally thought, which is good for the Colorado Rockies as Tulowitzki was batting .287 with 8 home runs and 27 RBI before his injury.
After taking the first game of their three-game weekend series against the New York Mets with a convincing 18-9 victory, the Colorado Rockies dropped the final two games to move to 10-11 on the season. Sunday's game was a close one, with the Mets pulling it out in the 11th inning on an Ike Davis RBI single in the top of the inning. Although he gave up the tying run in the 10th, Frank Francisco picked up his first victory of the season, while reliever Ramon Ramirez picked up his first save by closing it out for the Mets. Carlos Gonzalez led the Rockies offense with two hits, including a home run in the 10th off of Francisco.
While the Los Angeles Dodgers have grabbed most of the headlines in the NL West so far this season, the Colorado Rockies are playing solid baseball through their first 15 games with an 8-7 record. Newcomer Michael Cuddyer leads the lineup with a .345 batting average and 11 runs batted in, while Todd Helton paces the team in home runs with three. 49-year-old Jamie Moyer appears to be in prime form as he has lead the pitching staff with a 2.55 earned run average and a 1.30 WHIP. The team will go to Queens this weekend to face off against the New York
The Colorado Rockies have begun the 2012 season with a rough start, going 1-3 through their first four games. Offensively, the team has looked anemic, putting up only 10 runs to support their pitching staff. On a positive note, new addition Michael Cuddyer is off to a strong start with a .333 batting average and a home run, while franchise player Troy Tulowitzki has also added a home run and three runs batted in. Right-hander Juan Nicasio leads the pitching staff with a 1.29 ERA and 4 strikeouts through the first week of the season. The team hopes to rebound with series against the San Francisco Giants and the Arizona Diamondbacks this week.
