5/16/13: This is most likely political rhetoric and scare tactics, but some believe that the Miami Dolphins could move to Los Angeles at some time. The Dolphins wanted public money to refurbish their stadium. The bill did not even make it to the Florida House of Representatives floor during the last legislative session. No money means no improvements means no Super Bowl (the Miami fans should thank the Marlins for taking the public money). Since there is no upgrades to the stadium in the near future, and an open spot in L.A., could the Dolphins move? It is possible, but not likely. Unlike other Miami teams, the city actually cares about the Dolphins.

5/9/13: The Miami Dolphins are a pretty unhappy bunch right now. They were counting on the Florida legislature to approve a bill which would allow for a referendum on $360 million to upgrade Dolphins Stadium. Since the bill was not discussed in the sixty day session, Miami will not be eligible to host the fiftieth Super Bowl in a few years. San Francisco will likely get the honor. State congressional leaders may have been gun-shy about this bill, particularly after many feel that Marlins swindled their way into a half billion dollar stadium a few years ago. The difference is that people go to Dolphins games.

5/2/13: Miami and the Chiefs were in negotiations for offensive tackle Brandon Albert for weeks, with the hang up being second round compensation. The Fins had two second rounders, but wanted to part with the lower one. Chiefs wanted the higher one, of course. So Miami gave a big finger to the Chiefs when they traded up (with the Raiders) to the third overall slot and selected Oregon defensive end Dion Jordan. That second round pick was now gone. No deal was done. The Jordan pick is being criticized because many 'experts' do not believe he has the body type for the NFL, and he was rated much lower.

4/25/13: It is only April, but most people that follow the NFL, even if only casually, can predict the outcome of the AFC East. Most likely, New England will again win the division. Miami is up and coming and should be better than train wrecks that are the Bills and Jets. Miami finished 7-9 last year and out of the playoffs. With another year of experience and consistency at head coach, they should be able to move up somewhat. They are still trying to find a cornerstone left tackle to replace Jake Long, so Lane Johnson makes a lot of sense with the 12th pick overall.

4/18/13: Dolphins General Manager Jeff Ireland appears to be trying to throw out one of the more public smokescreens in recent years. He claims to be content at staying at the 12th pick but, also says that he has the ammunition to trade up to the number one overall selection. Many people believe that the Fins covet Oklahoma offensive lineman Lane Johnson. However, most also believe that he will be gone by the time Miami picks. Miami could use a replacement for former All Pro Jake Long (their number one pick five years ago), who left for St. Louis in the off season.

4/11/13: Recent reports have the Dolphins trying to trade up in the first round to select left tackle Lane Johnson out of the University of Oklahoma. Johnson is super athletic. He claims he can still do a 360 dunk. He ran a sub 5.0 in the 40 yard dash at the combine - equal to Anquan Boldin's time in 2003 and has a 34 inch vertical. He is likely to be selected in the top 10, if not the top seven. Therefore, the Dolphins are going to have to create a package for someone in order to move up and take him. The good news is that the Fins have extra picks this year from the deal that sent Brandon Marshall to Chicago.

4/4/13: Miami has been one of the more active teams this free agency, and looks like they just nabbed the last of the big name free agents for this off season. The Dolphins agreed to a one year deal with cornerback Brent Grimes over the weekend. Grimes was considered one of the league's better corners, and started 28 games in 2010 and 2011. However, he injured his Achilles tendon in the opener last year and missed the season. If he can return to health and his past abilities, then the Dolphins may have have stolen a solid secondary starter to help shut down the Patriots offensive attack.

3/28/13: Head coach Joe Philbin is putting his stamp on the roster this offseason. Unlike a year ago, Philbin has been heaviliy involved with GM Jeff Ireland on free agent and draft targets. Philbin spent his early days with the Dolphins organizing his staff. He was hired a bit late, so Ireland already had the free agent strategy underway, leaving Philbin rather silent. This time around was different. The team has loaded up on defensive free agents and an elite (if inconsistent) wide receiver. The coach also has more of a say in draft, as the organization is taking a more collaberative approach this year.

3/21/13: Miami made big splashes by luring wide receiver Mike Wallace (Steelers) and linebacker Dannell (Ravens) last week, but they could not keep one of their own. Left tackle Jake Long signed with the St. Louis Rams. The Dolphins tried to keep Long, and made an $8 million per year offer, but the Rams came in at $9 million ($36 million over four years). The Dolphins made Long their number one pick in 2008, the first pick overall. The Rams picked second that year and wanted Long. When he was not available, they selected defensive end Chris Long (no relation).

3/14/13: The Dolphins got very busy on the first the day of free agency, signing top free agents Mike Wallace and Dannell Ellerby to large and long term deals. At the same time, Miami cut Karlos Dansby just moments after announcing the Ellerby signing. Dansby refused to restructure his $42.5 million deal, which had two years remaining. The Dolphins finally got a top end receiver to stretch the field and open up the entire offense. Wallace became available after he and the Steelers could not come to a long term deal and the Steelers elected to move forward with Antonio Brown as the primary receiver.

3/7/13: When Jake Long got hurt and was ably replaced by a no-name, the speculation that the team would not franchise tag him grew. Those predictions came true, as the Dolphins used their franchise tag on defensive tackle Randy Starks, a two time Pro-Bowler. Jake Long will likely be a free agent, as will Chris Clemmons. The Dolphins will need another pass rusher, and may use a high draft pick to fill that need. In any case, the Dolphins are building up their defense in an effort to slow down division rival New England and their vaunted offense.

2/28/13: Not too many years ago, Reggie Bush was the most acclaimed player in the draft. Houston surprised everyone when they selected Mario Williams with the number one pick that year, leaving Bush to fall to the New Orleans Saints. After a few unremarkable and injury filled years in New Orleans, he revived his career in Miami. He has not had the record breaking tenure many imagined when he came out of USC, but has been solid in the past few years. His contract has expired and he has not received an offer from Miami. It looks like his time with the Dolphins is finished and will be heading elsewhere next season.

2/14/13: The Dolphins endured their fourth consecutive losing season. While this would be easy to swallow for Rams or Bills fans, Miami does have a winning legacy. But the Dolphins seem to believe their 7-9 record shows great improvement and that the team will continue to improve under head coach Joe Philbin. The big news out of Miami is no news. There was no major organizational shake-up, no restructuring of the coaching staff, and no mass firings of the front office. Owner Stephen Ross is actually borrowing patience from the Pittsburgh Steelers and expects his team to grow and over take New England in the next few years.

2/7/13: The Dolphins may be able to benefit from the outstanding play of Aaron Rodgers and Packers wide receiving corps. With the emergence of Jordy Nelson, Randall Cobb, and James Jones; Greg Jennings may be available. He is a free agent and the Packers are not likely to bring him back at the money he wants. Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin was the Packers offensive coordinator for several years and has a good relationship with Jennings, so they may be reunited in South Florida. But beware, Jennings was injured for much of last season and recorded career lows in most categories.

1/31/13: The Dolphins may be getting ready to cut ties with starting left tackle Jake Long. Long was the first overall pick a few years ago (one pick ahead of Howie Long's son Chris Long, who has developed into a very good defensive lineman for the St. Louis Rams). However, he was injured late in the season and there was no determinable drop in play from his backup. Jake Long is said to want $10 million a year, and certainly some team will be willing to pay that for a top left tackle, but it may well not be the Dolphins.

1/24/13: Dolphins' owner Stephen Ross does not sound like he is about to shake anything up. He stated publicly that he believes that the most important positions are the head coach and quarterback. Apparently he feels that the team is progressing according to plan, though he is disappointed that Miami missed the playoffs with a 7-9 record. Perhaps more interesting is that he is retaining GM Jeff Ireland. Ireland has been rebuffed several times by big names such as Jeff Fisher and others, yet seem to have his boss' confidence, which is all that really matters in any job.

1/17/13: Miami selected Jake Long with the first overall pick in the 2008 draft, hoping they would fill the left tackle position for the next decade. Long was excellent his first four years, earning Pro-Bowl honors each season. But injuries this past season led to a decline in performance. Once he was sidelined for good in December, rookie Jonathan Martin moved to the blind side and did a fine job. Long's contract is up and the Dolphins may be hesitant to place a franchise tag (cost: $15 million) on him. Considering Martin makes $2.5 million, the Fins may elect to let Long walk away unless he is willing to take a major pay cut.

1/10/13: The Dolphins appear to be staying the course for next season, and owner Steven Ross has publicly said that his coach and quarterback are keepers. Miami drafted Ryan Tannehill in the first round. He did not have the sensational seasons that Andrew Luck, RG3, or Russell Wilson had, but he also did not have the same weapons. The Dolphins are expected to have about $46 million under the cap, much of which will likely be spent on the five draft picks they have in the first three rounds. They may have even more if they elect to cut ties with former number one overall pick Jake Long.

1/3/13: Miami finished their season with a lackluster performance and disheartening loss to New England. The 28-0 loss set the Dolphins' final record at 7-9, and well out of the playoffs. QB Ryan Tannehill threw for 235 yards and one pick, but the running game was nowhere to be found. The Dolphins managed only about 50 yards throughout the game, and never posed a threat to Tom Brady and the Patriots. Unlike other coaches of losing teams, Coach Philbin is not on the hot seat after his first season and breaking in a rookie quarterback. For the Fins, they are on the right track, but must add some offensive weapons this offseason.

12/27/12: Miami's victory over division rival Buffalo was not enough to keep the Dolphins' playoff hopes alive. That door was shut when the Bengals defeated the Steelers just moments after the Dolphins' win. This is the 10th time in 11 seasons that the team has missed the playoffs. However, Reggie Bush showed that he can be an effective NFL running back when he is used like he was at USC. He scored on two TD passes and a third on a short run. Miami now stands at 7-8 on the season, and has a chance to make it to .500 when they travel to New England this Sunday in the season finale.

12/20/12: The Dolphins may not have much to play for, but beating an in-state rival is always satisfying. Miami dominated Jacksonville for a 24-3 win, improving their record to 6-8 on the season. Rookie QB Ryan Tannehill threw for 220 yards and 2 TDs, while Reggie Bush ran for 104, including a 53 yarder.The Dolphins are demonstrating that they have some decent personnel, but could certainly use some help in the receiving corps in the offseason. Miami has another chance at a moral victory this weekend, as they host their long-time rival the Buffalo Bills at 1pm on Sunday.

12/13/12: Miami hosted the 49ers on Sunday, in a game that probably would have been tremendous 25 years ago. Instead, San Francisco treaded water in the first half before imposing their will on the Dolphins with strong defense and a great running game. Miami surrendered three second half rushing touchdowns, including a 50 yard scamper by quarterback Colin Kaepernick. The Dolphins are stuck at 5 wins on the season, and are likely out of the playoff race. The team will have to get more out of their offense, especially since Tannehill only threw from 150 yards and one TD. Next up for the Dolphins: at home against Jacksonville.

12/6/12: Many pro football analysts expected the Dolphins' game last Sunday against the Patriots to be a blowout. But Miami proved them wrong. Though they lost 23-16, the Dolphins gave the Patriots all they could handle, limiting Tom Brady to only 238 yards passing and one touchdown. Unfortunately, the Fins could not get any offense going of their own, as quarterback Ryan Tannehill was limited to only 186 yards and no TDs on 13 of 29 passing. Miami is now 5-7 and would need help to make the postseason. Next up is a trip to the Bay Area to face the NFC West-leading 49er's, who are coming off of a heartbreaking overtime loss to the St. Louis Rams.

Welcome to Miami, bienvenido a Miami! Through free agency and the 2012 NFL Draft, the Miami Dolphins completed their off-season player acquisition phase. The Dolphins traded Brandon Marshall to the Bears for two third-round picks on the opening day of free agency and subsequently selected several quality football players in the 2012 NFL draft. Those players were introduced to Dolphins fans last weekend at the first-ever Fin Fest, a fan friendly event at Sun Life Stadium! The main attraction was Dolphins' top pick, Texas A&M; quarterback Ryan Tannehill, who quickly climbed up the draft board after wowing scouts in his pre-draft workouts. Also present at the festival were two local draft picks, Olivier Vernon and Lamar Miller, who both played at the University of Miami. Over five thousand fans gathered to celebrate with the players and usher in a new era of Dolphins football!

The Miami Dolphins are one of the original members of the old AFL, and have been one of the most consistently good teams in the NFL. Their five trips to the Super Bowl and two NFL Championships make them one of the most decorated franchises as well. The Dolphins are also the only NFL team ever to have won a Super Bowl and accomplish it without losing a game all year, as the 1972 team went 14-0. People in Miami miss the days of Dan Marino and Mercury Morris. The Dolphins signed Reggie Bush hoping he could make some noise in South Beach. Brandon Marshall is hoping for the Dolphins to sign a quarterback to get him the ball. All they did was sign Matt Moore. There hasn't been much noise going on in the club house and the organization hasn't done much to improve the team. There isn't much hope in the immediate future for the team but maybe they'll be able to make some moves as the preseason begins.
