This was the season when the New York Knicks were able to overcome much of the adversity that had hounded them since the arrival of Carmelo Anthony and Amar'e Stoudemire. Injuries kept the powerful Stoudemire out of the front court, and despite the addition of Tyson Chandler, a talented and reliable defender, the Knicks generally seemed to be one piece short of really making a NBA Finals run in the postseason. This season, however, the New York Knicks moved Anthony to power forward, revealing the ability of their roster to maximize their offensive potential using small ball spacing and pace. 'Melo thrived even though he was moved off of the wing, leading the NBA in scoring and ably defending a number of the leagues best interior players. A season of preparing for those kind of defensive battles have benefited the Knicks so far, as both the Boston Celtics and Indiana Pacers are known as tough defensive teams.

What may be giving the New York Knicks players and Madison Square Garden crowd the most confidence, however, are their perceived chances to be a legitimate contender all the way through the Eastern Conference and into the NBA Finals. Unless the depleted Chicago Bulls provide a massive upset, the Knicks would have to get through the defending NBA Champion Miami Heat in order to compete in the 2013 NBA Finals. The Knicks wouldn't walk into a series like that intimidated, though, because they beat LeBron James and the Heat three out of four times they faced during the regular season. The interior presence of Chandler is hard for any team, including the somewhat smaller Heat, to handle, and the hot hands of Anthony, JR Smith, and a deep bench of talented three point shooters has Manhattan buzzing for their most legitimate NBA Finals run since they lost the title to the San Antonio Spurs 14 years ago. They've overcome a previous streak of two straight first-round exits, and not the New York Knicks are shooting for the NBA Finals with all the barrels.
